MLB 15 The Show: Diamond Dynasty First Look & Initial Impressions

Diamond Dynasty “Distilled” was the term San Diego Studios used when introducing their new ultimate team mode in MLB 15 The Show and it definitely lives up to its name. This mode has been greatly improved through simplification, intuitiveness, and overall ease of acquiring cards. No longer do users have to worry about messing with fictional “dynasty” players (except the one dynasty player every team has) or running out of games played. Once you acquire a player then you have him forever, unless you sell or feed that card to your one created “dynasty” player.

Presentation and Menus: The menus are much easier to roam due to overall less to choose from and simplification. Your team management is all located within your “My Squad” and you can then add any other player from your collections to your 25 man roster. You can also generate a best lineup and rotation which helps build a base for your 25 man roster. The marketplace is self explanatory and easy to use with buy/sell orders. The logo and team uniform customization is back again and is pretty much the same as the last three years, which is a great thing. Users can also download logos via the logo vault. Overall, it will not take users long to figure out the menus and get started building their teams.

Standings are exactly the same as in past and work just as well. I’ve always enjoyed how the leaderboards for Diamond Dynasty worked and how it has a unique spin on it. Teams can also earn patches when they promote or earn an achievement and this adds to the overall presentation of the mode.

Collections are also back, but this time you can earn historic and legendary players once you complete a teams’ collection. This will add a lot of depth to the mode as it will take users quite a while to complete these and will make opening packs that much more addicting.

Something also to note that adds to the presentation is the licensed equipment you can equip on your created “dynasty” player for attribute increases. It acts an RPG element and is similar to your own “Road to the Show” player you can use offline.

Gameplay: The online latency was a huge problem last year across all online game modes, but this year the online seems to be much smoother. San Diego Studios promised that they are getting close to that 1:1 ratio of online playing just like offline in terms of latency and synchronization. It almost felt like I was playing offline while hitting, fielding, and pitching. The baserunning was much improved but I did notice a few warping issues and unresponsiveness with commands. Overall, it played well and I experienced no freezes or setbacks during my games.

Other Features: Extra Innings and Playing the CPU is back again. Users can play their friends or anyone for that matter in an offline game via Extra Innings. It goes based off your opponents’ universal profile and tendencies. It worked well last year and it seems to be the same this year. This is a great way to interact with your friends while they are offline and challenge those near the top of the leaderboard. You can also earn rewards and item packs, as well as good ole’ bragging rights with your buddies. I really do like this feature and hope more people take advantage of it.

Overall: Diamond Dynasty “Distilled” is simplified, yet feels like you have more options to play. There are an array of combinations of how you can use your one “dynasty” player and it will be fun experimenting with those tactics. The ease of the menus, improved online play, and convenience of earning rewards throughout all game modes will allow users to divulge into Diamond Dynasty in a much more natural transition than in years’ past.

NBA 2K15 Tips: How to Run the 7 Seconds Offense Like Steve Nash

When thinking of Nash’s MVP days in Phoenix, a Nash + Amare Pick and Roll is usually the first image that comes to mind. What people tend to forget, is that sneaky back cut hand off Nash dished out as he penetrated the D. In the video above, you can learn how to recreate this classic Phoenix Suns action in 2K15. The play itself is called 12 Give Fist 14 (a pick and roll option play), and it does a brilliant job of having the PG and the SG run a hand off while the PG penetrates up the middle. Every time I run this play, the Nash Phoenix Suns nostalgia becomes too real.

The second play we will look at is a Nash & Amar’e Pick and Roll (of course); however this isn’t your everyday vanilla PnR. This play, Spread 15 Fist Out, has the ability to begin as a 3-2 pick and fade and then turn into a 4-1 Spread High Pick and Roll. Such a style of attack is reminiscent of those 2004-2010 Suns captained by the 2-time MVP. Check out the video for more indepth details.

With these two plays at your disposal, you will be able to run a smooth ultra high tempo offense in 2K15. This is because both plays can actually be called during transition or right after a score; allowing you to set up your attack ASAP. In the right hands, 7 seconds or less is definitely possible.  If you enjoyed these NBA 2K15 Tips be sure to check Sports Gamers Online daily for new FREE tips to your favorite sports games and subscribe to my youtube channel!

NBA 2K15 Review: Midterm Grades

The next installment of our Midterm Reviews focuses on the popular NBA 2K15. In this review we will tackle content, graphics and presentation, gameplay, fun factor, and longevity. The Midterm Grades give a more accurate representation of the overall quality of the game because we have had almost six months to play, explore, poke and prod this game and know it now better than anyone who gave the week one review. We will take an in depth look at each mode and I will offer some suggestions on possible fixes.

Content

SCORE: 6.5

MyLeague: MyLeague offers players the ability to fully customize from financial rules in trades to chance of career ending injury. This mode is a big step up from the previous installment but still could use some improvements on the simulation side of things. The ability to adjust sliders such as Trade Negotiation Difficulty and Career-Ending Injury Frequency is a nice addition but I still find it fairly easy to assemble a Super Team after a couple years. The mode has been a big step up but has room for improvements.

NBA_2K15_Review_20150322123753
MyGM offers players a plethora of options to control the franchise.

NBA 2K15_20150322124718
Waiting in line upwards of 20 minutes to play a pick-up game should be eliminated.

MyGM: In MyGM you take the role of an NBA GM. This mode allows you to have the responsibilities of an NBA GM who can draft, sign, trade and cut players but who also can be fired as GM if his performance isn’t up to the teams standards after which the player is free to sign as GM with any team who wants to offer. Again in this mode I have found it a bit too easy to compile draft picks and sign almost any free agent if the team has the money. In the mode the player has meetings with coaches and players and while this is a cool concept in reality it takes up time with loading screens and sloppy menus.

MyCareer/MyPark: What used to be 2K’s pride and joy has descended into something that is a distant relative to its once great MyPlayer mode. In NBA 2K11 MyPlayer players could create unlimited, completely different MyPlayers and upgrade how ever they desired within the attribute caps, play quick matches online with up to 9 other user control players, matchmaking and the insanely popular Crew Mode. In 2K15 players create one avatar (MyPlayer) who is used in park and career but if you want to create another career the new player will have the same name and appearance as the last MyCareer. Instead of upgrading individual attributes in2K15 players are forced to dump VC into different upgrade groups which upgrade a handful of attributes at a time. Honestly I dont hate this idea but the reason it fails is because there are only SIX categories. Players cant upgrade Driving Layup without upgrading Post Control. To improve Shot Close you must also raise Shot Three. What if a user wants to create a slashing guard who isn’t a great three point shooter but can finish at the rim and has a nice mid range game? They have to waste VC to put into the attribute categories and raise his Shot Three and and increase his Post Hook just to raise his Mid range and Layup game. That is unacceptable and really limits players in what they can do with their MyCareers. If they expanded on this idea and perhaps had 20+ categories to invest in with different combos of attributes, the mode would be much better. Or just resort back to the individual upgrades, not sure what was wrong with that. The Upgrades cap they introduced in an attempt to limit players buying 99’s right away is a terrible idea which should be removed for next years edition. I can tell you right now exactly how to limit players from buying 99 overall players as the game comes out. REMOVE VC.

NBA_2K15_Review_20150322124449
Although a great concept, long loading times, glitches and poor game play rob this game mode of its potential

I know that will never happen but I dream of a game where its not pay to win but play to win. The Park is a complete disgrace. Long loading times just to get into a game then legitimately the worst possible matchmaking systems I have ever experienced. Once in the Park players must stand on glitchy circles next to an active court waiting for the game to finish. This results in waits for minimum 10 mins just to play one game. I don’t find playing at the Park worth my time. It is a novel concept which completely falls flat. If this system isn’t removed from the game next year than it is obvious 2K doesn’t listen to their fan base.

MyTeam: A fast growing, build your own team, mode with a dedicated fan base. Modeled after the widely successful EA “Ultimate Team” mode, this card collecting game allows players to create teams with players from any era of the NBA. For the first time this year 2K finally introduced a MyTeam Market to buy and sell cards and bringing an extra dimension to the game. Other than that I have very little positive to say about the mode. Limited modes and lack of ways to make in mode currency in MyTeam make it hard to enjoy. “Domination” pits you against every team in the NBA. Once a player beats a team a player from the defeated team is awarded. Domination was the most fun I had playing MyTeam mode but once completed players can not replay it meaning most haven’t touched the mode since completing it within the first weeks of 2Ks release. The online head to head mode, Road to the Playoffs, is the most played mode but once a player reaches the first seed there is little left to do in the mode. The Solo Challenges are laughable with only 46 challenges and most featuring lineup restrictions which force players to spend the in game mode currency, MT, on players to meet restrictions just to be able to participate.

NBA_2K15_Review_20150322123029
MyTeam, the card collecting game mode spawned off EA’s popular “Ultimate Team” has improved every year.

In the end I have still logged quite a bit of time in this mode so who am I to say its nothing special if I still put hours and hours into it, but bottom line this mode falls short in just about every aspect but is carried because of the great idea behind the mode and its untapped potential. This mode has become a huge money maker for 2K, now its time for them to invest that money back into the mode and provide high quality content. NBA 2K15 has plenty of modes to choose from which is nice and can keep things fresh for a while but the lack of depth and quality for each mode is the reason I gave a mediocre score.

Graphics and Presentation

SCORE: 8.5

Menu system in NBA 2K15 is a bit clunky but other than slow entering and exiting menu pages the menus are pretty crisp and easy to use. The presentation of the Main Menu is rough though. Every time a player boots up 2K they are greeted by the always annoying and never asked for 2KTV. Can’t be disabled or be muted,  this “feature” can be removed next year with no community backlash.

Game Presentation could use improvement but in general is pretty good. The much hyped Shaq and Ernie show falls flat because of lack of diversity in lines and sometimes the mouths move without any sound coming out. Its more flash than substance and quite forgettable. The loading screen menus are sharp and easy to use. During stoppages in play, in between quarters and halftime, 2K very cleverly integrates product placement by showing the scoring table which flashes Sprint and Gatorade adds that only last a few seconds but are unskippable. A big “New Feature” 2K was excited about at release was the all new Dance Girls. Every team has the exact same routine every game, not exact anything special and worth a hard skip every time.

NBA_2K15_Review_20150320235651
Graphics on Next Gen are best in class and can produce some beautiful screenshots.

The in game graphics in NBA 2K15 are quite impressive. Almost every face is recognizable and the court and lighting look great. If graphics are important to you then this game doesn’t disappoint on the court. Just off the court could use an improvement. The crowd is generally pretty average unless a big dunk happens. The crowd doesn’t have much life to it although the stadium does empty during an away team blow out which is a nice touch. In the end the on court graphics are excellent but there is always room for improvement. Despite NBA 2K15 providing arguably the best commentary in sports gaming the road ahead is still long. There hasn’t been any real update to the commentary for years and it seems they have “shifted into neutral” when it comes to commentary improvements.

Gameplay

SCORE: 7.5

After promising and advertising that this years game would eliminate a number of different “Cheeses”, aka gameplay exploits, none of those promises were realized except for the removal of the 1-3-1 zone for which we are all grateful. Zig Zag Cheese is just as good as ever, backcourt charges still get called at times, chucking 20+ threes a game is still an effective strategy, the baseline is a new-age teleportation device delivering any player with over 70 dunk or layup directly to the rim. Not only do these things still exist, they can be used more effectively than finding open shots. If it wasn’t for Patch 5 on PS4 bumping up the shooting percentages of open shots, (respect to 2K for grinding out that patch late into the development cycle) using exploits online would have became a better tactic than playing actual basketball. Hopefully XB1 players will get this patch soon.

Online gameplay is gonna need some serious work, we are still a long ways away in 2K where the better player will always win online. On the other hand, Offline gameplay is like a dream. The freelance Offense system in 2K has a steep learning curve; but if a user can incorporate this feature properly, authentic NBA action can be replicated at-will. The depth of the playbook system is also incredible. Plays in 2K can automatically branch out counters on their own and there are close to a hundred of these option plays in the game. It is really too bad 2K doesn’t offer any in depth instructions on how-to best use these features. Responsiveness of controls are also the best it has ever been; however, there’s still minor delay in control input during rebounding and lose ball situations.

Online gameplay is poor because there are too many opportunities and clear-cut incentives for using exploits. Offline gameplay, 2K15 is the best basketball ever. Depending what kind of gamer you are, 2K15 gameplay can make you feel two entirely different ways; and that’s honestly too bad, since this game plays so well offline.

Fun Factor

SCORE: 6.5

NBA 2K is a almost always a blast to play with a friend on the couch. With the full NBA and a decent selection of Historic teams, there are plenty of great matchups to be played. BlackTop is a fun way to try out a variety of players, I just wish there was an option for standard scoring not just the 1’s and 2’s. The servers for 2K are straight up garbage. For all the money they make from game sales and VC sales the consistency of the servers is pathetic. Often times players will have to keep restarting the game just to try and get a connection and since almost all modes function with VC those modes are unavailable to be played without an internet connection further restricting players ability to play the game they paid for because 2K cant connect. Lagging out is a regular occurrence in any online mode and input lag is almost to be expected. They need a serious upgrade in the server department considering they funnel every mode through the servers. I certainly have fun playing 2K but its a game of highs and lows. If the Fun Factor is 6.5 then the Frustration Level is an 8.

Longevity

SCORE: 8

With the numerous modes they offer NBA 2K15 can hold a players interest for a while. Sports games don’t really end so hours and hours of 2K can be played without feeling like you are completing the game. I love the NBA and my love of the NBA is stronger than my disappointment with the final product. I still play the game regularly six months after release so I cant say it isn’t worth the money but just know the more time a player invests in the game the more frustration will rise. 2K has the potential to put out a truly outstanding game but year after year fail to listen to the community, strip game modes and introduce features the community never asked for so they can market it as “New Features”. I am a bit harsh with the review because of the potential product they could realistically put out with all the money flooding into 2K via VC. It is certainly worth the purchase if you love the NBA but just be wary, the game is an equal source of fun and frustration.

NBA 2K15 Offensive Tips: Pace & Space 101

Pace & Space offensive scheme has been showcased the past few years with the Miami Heat.  Erik Spoelstra implemented the offense so that Wade and LeBron can constantly be attacking the rim without having to run set plays for just one or the other.  Chris Bosh was also a vital asset for this offensive scheme, and it allowed him to play a bigger role in the Miami Heat’s offense. This is a Pick and Roll/Attack the Basket style of offense that uses 4 players on the perimeter, so if you have multiple athletes on the floor plus a good stretch/athletic 4 and want to keep the defense honest then I recommend giving this offense a try.  This offense does include off ball movement, fade screens, and off ball screens too.

To enable the Pace & Space offense, make sure that you have selected Pace and Freelance movement as your offensive strategy.  You then can set your points of emphasis for how you want to primarily run this offense.  I’d recommend pick and roll offense, attack the basket, or to play through a certain player.

To initiate the offense you can either use the 2k smart play button (L1 or LB) which will pick a quick action based off your points of emphasis and positioning.  You can also make a pass to one of the wings and give it a 1 second count (also make sure you have play diagram on) for the offense to be initiated.  From there you will have limitless options based on your personnel, POE, and teams’ positioning on the court.  There is no way set way to initiate a specific action, but it will keep the defense honest as there are multiple options for each pass.

Be sure to keep a few of these pointers in mind when you are running the Pace & Space Freelance Offense or any Freelance offense for that matter:

1. This is primarily a 4-1 offense.  You have to make sure your PF can either shoot or be able to create off the dribble.  There are ton of PF’s who can shoot the deep ball, but you can also use this offense with a player like Josh Smith who has athleticism and decent handles for a big.  This is what Chris Bosh a perfect for this scheme.

2. Exploit mismatches within the offense. If you see that your opponent switched on you during a Pick and Roll then do not be afraid to post up the smaller player or isolate the quicker guard on a big.  Use your heads out there and do not be strictly tied to the play art diagram.

3. Pay attention the shot clock. If time is 10 seconds or below then either manually call your own play like a quick isolation, off ball screen, or pick and roll.  You can also use the 2K smart play button and it should initiate a quick action based on your positioning and personnel.

4. Use the Points of Emphasis based on your personnel and situations! For example, if you sub in your back up PG who does not nearly have the athleticism or finishing ability as your starter then do not try and attack the basket with him.  Change your POE’s from Pick and Roll/Attack the Basket to Play through one of your best players on the court or Get Shooters Open.  Know your players’ limitations as well as their strengths.

5. Have some back up plays to add to your repertoire. I like to add my own pick and roll plays for my PG and 3 pt/mid range plays for my wings.  Freelance offenses are designed to be your primary options and should start to come instinctively to you, but make sure you have a few of your own sets you like to run based on the situations and to mix it up a bit.

In addition to the roster update, 2K Sports released their latest post launch patch on March 13th. The patch mainly addressed stability issues as well as fixing an issue where gamers couldn’t equip shoes that they have bought. Additionally, 2K Sports fixed a rare occurrence in which the MyPark rep would get stuck. Shooting percentage rates have also been adjusted to portray a more accurate outcome on wide open, opposed to highly contested shots. Senior Game play director Mike Wang shed some light on how and why these decisions were made.

Originally Posted by  Mike Wang :

The shot heuristics are pretty complex at a basic level. Pre-patch, the numbers looked something like this for a decent shooter at mid-range:

Wide open = 45%

Fully Contested = 35%

Heavily Contested = 10%

That’s why many people complained that “being open” didn’t really matter much, and they were right. Post-patch, that same shooter is now:

Wide open = 60%

Fully Contested = 20%

Heavily Contested = 10%

So over the course of the game, assuming both teams shoot an even spread of open and contested jumpers, you should’ve seen zero change to your end-of-game shot percentages when comparing pre- and post-patch. But if you trend hard one way or the other (all your shots are open or all your shots are contested), you would’ve seen a very noticeable change.

If both teams play solid defense, I can believe that a player might go 80% from the field from time to time, but it definitely shouldn’t be the norm. Also, in case you’re wondering, I didn’t touch three-point percentages at all, only layup, close and mid-range values.

I also fixed the “glitched” shots being unable to get perfect release, so that will factor in as well.

2K Sports has not released any official patch notes yet as XBOX ONE users are still awaiting their update and we don’t expect to see it until that happens. MLB 15 The Show Tips: Best 5 Teams to Use Online

Every spring marks not only opening day for Major League Baseball, but it can also be a significant time for sports gamers.  March 31st will be another “opening day” for a lot of us hardcore baseball gamers as San Diego Studios releases another iteration of MLB The Show.

For gamers the first few weeks of the game’s release can always be interesting, especially for online play. Fans will try out their favorite team right away, but afterwards most gamers play as the teams that made a lot of offseason moves, possess the best roster, teams that are getting a lot of spring training hype, or a combination of the three.  For me it always interesting to see what teams are popular the first few weeks and how people use that team.  There are always teams that never meet expectations and eventually stop being used after roster updates.  Then you have teams that were never used in the first few weeks, but after that team plays well in the season everyone will want to give them a try.

With MLB 15 The Show release date only a few days away (6 days but who is counting?), here are some teams you may want to try when you first jump online…

Keep in mind most of these overalls were pulled from San Diego Studios’ live streams and although we do not know their individual attributes we can make good estimates.  San Diego Studios goes by a 3 year average where they put the most weight (50%) into that player’s most recent season.  It then will be weighed by 25% for their 2nd and 3rd more recent seasons.  For players that have less than 3 years’ experience, SDS tries to be reasonable and put more weight into their most recent season, while considering the fact that player could still be young and has not had enough playing time for a formidable sample size to base a rating off of.  This will make players, such as, Will Myers very difficult to project and assign an accurate rating to.  Something else to consider is that international free agents and/or MiLB prospects will not be added to the roster until they have played in a MLB game.  So do not expect to see the Korean phenom, Jung-ho Kang, in the game on opening day.

5. Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays added some key players in the offseason.  They acquired Josh Donaldson from the Oakland Athletics, Russell Martin via Free Agency, Andy Dirks from the Tigers, and Justin Smoak via waivers.  They did lose some power, however.  Colby Rasmus went to the Astros, while Adam Lind will now be the Brewers’ new first basemen.  Those are two left handed power hitters that the Jays will miss.  The Jays also lost Brett Lawrie in the trade with Oakland, who could eventually turn into a star but has never had a great offensive season yet.

The Blue Jays should still have a great lineup with tons of power, but they will be lacking some defense, especially in the outfield.  With no proven center fielder, you may have to sacrifice defense for offense (until Pompey gets added to the roster anyways).

Navarro will be an excellent bench player as he can hit from both sides of the plate, as well as play C, DH, or 1B.  It’ll be hard to play him over Martin, Encarnacion, or Bautista, but it never hurts to have depth.  Viciedo will platoon vs lefties or when Dirks is out.  This lineup has a nice balance of switch hitters, lefties, and righties.

Pitching will be the weak spot, but with Dickey and Buehrle at the top of the rotation that should be good enough to get you through 5-6 innings.  Plus, we all know facing a knuckleballer can be a chore in this game.

Expect this team to be one of the more popular teams to be used and for a great reason….they can simply hit and hit it far.

4. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox also made a lot of moves in the offseason.  They acquired Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez via free agency. They also acquired Porcello from the Tigers where they sent them back Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Wilson.  Additionally, they obtained Wade Miley from the D-backs via another trade, as well as signing the sinker baller, Justin Masterson.

This team will be loaded with offense, defense, and tons of depth.  They will be able to platoon very easily with players like Victorino, Craig, Nava, and Hanigan.

Their big international free agent signing with Yoan Moncada will not be reflected in the roster until he plays a game.  He is not projected to start on the MLB 25 man roster, so it could be awhile before we see him for online play.

Pitching will be their weakness.  Red Sox went for a “budget” rotation and went after guys who threw heavy sinkers.  Porcello, Kelly, and Masterson all do just that.  They still have Bucholz, but they lack a true Ace and honestly even a legitimate number 2 starter.  Similar to the Jays, the Sox pitching should allow you to keep the ball in the ballpark and try to win games by offense.  It will be hard to strike out your opponents, but if you can utilize those heavy sinkers/2-seamers then it should get the job done.

The Red Sox will always be a common team online, regardless of their talent.  I saw a lot of users online still using them, despite their down year.  Do not be surprised of the Red Sox become even more popular this year and be sure to give their offense a try!

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers also went through of a lot of changes in the offseason.  They definitely will be missing the power bats of Matt Kemp, who went to San Diego, and Hanley Ramirez, who became a Free agent and eventually signed by Boston.  Fortunately, the Dodgers had one of the deepest benches in the game and had a plethora of outfielders that can now step in the place of Matt Kemp.  Ethier should now be given a chance to start every day, while Van Slyke and Joc Pederson will be able to platoon. To replace Hanley, the Dodgers obtained Jimmy Rollins and he should still be an asset at SS.  However, do not expect for Rollins to be hitting for much power or average.  Last year, his power maxed out in the 50’s for San Diego Studios’ final roster update and his contact was not much better.  Despite the lack of hitting, he will be an upgrade defensively and on the basepaths.

Dee Gordon’s speed will also be missed, but in return the Dodgers did get one of the more established hitting Second Basemen in the league, Howie Kendrick.  Kendrick will be an upgrade offensively as his Power and Contact ratings should be both higher than what Gordon’s was last year.

Turner hit over .300 coming off the bench and was one of the league’s best pinch hitters.  Expect to see his contact rating to be 75+, while Barney can be a late inning defensive upgrade at 2B/SS.  Heisey will also be another useful power bat off the bench in key situations.

Of course, the Dodgers’ strength will be their pitching rotation.  They have the best pitcher in the game in Kershaw, along with 4 other quality starters.  Whenever you choose the Dodgers online, expect to have a quality hurler on the mound.

Their vulnerability, if they really have one in the game, will be their lack of bullpen depth.  Jansen is a great closer, but he may not even be usable upon release for online.  You should still be able to survive without having a good bullpen, since most of the Dodgers’ starting pitchers can give you 7-8 innings easily, especially for online play where most players struggle to work the count.  If I were to pick a faucet of the game which is needed least in an online baseball game, then bullpen depth would be it.

Dodger Fans should be proud to use their team online and with the key additions, expect the Los Angeles Dodgers to be one of the most common teams to use online.  If you are struggling with pitching then perhaps you should give them a try as well!

2. Seattle Mariners

Seattle will be another trendy pick for online gamers due to the acquisition of Nelson Cruz.  They also added Seth Smith, who hits right handed pitching very well.  Other than that, there were not many big offseason moves done by Seattle.

With the addition of Nelson Cruz, the Mariners should instantly turn into a top 10 lineup.  They have, arguably, the best hitting second baseman in Robinson Cano, a young emerging 3B in Kyle Seager, and a catcher that was 3rd in the league in homeruns. Brad Miller, Seth Smith, Austin Jackson, and Logan Morrison all should offer a little pop as well. There will be plenty of power in the middle of this lineup.

Felix Hernandez could have easily won Cy Young last year for the AL and will again be one of the better online pitchers to use due to his nasty sinker/slider combination.  Add in Iwakuma, Paxton, and Walker and you have one filthy rotation.  I don’t think this is necessary a top tier rotation, but it is right up there.

The Bullpen will not be a letdown either.  Fernando Rodney and his nasty circle change is always tough to hit.  Farquhar, Wilhelmsen, and Furbush add some good depth to the bullpen, as well.

One reason I like using Seattle is their surplus of left handed hitters.  Personally, I tend to hit better with lefties, since most of the time you’ll be facing right handed pitching.  Those breaking balls are a little easier to recognize and you have a little more time to react to fastballs.  Cruz should add a little more balance with the lineup.

Of course, the split attributes work both ways and can act as a double edged sword.  A major weakness with Seattle last year was the fact they could not hit left handed pitching.  This will again be their Achilles’ heel.  Cruz will help offset this a bit, but do not get twisted at all.  This team is designed to hit right handed pitching!

Expect to see Seattle be used a little more this year.  I don’t think they’ll be as popular as teams like the Red Sox, Jays, or Dodgers, but they will be just as useful to use online.  Make sure and give them a try and see if you can take advantage of the smaller RF in Safeco!

Recommended Lineup

Austin Jackson (79) CF

Robinson Cano (95) 2B

Kyle Seager (87) 3B

Nelson Cruz (83) DH

Seth Smith (74) RF

Brad Miller (74) SS

Dustin Ackley (72) LF

Key Bench Players

Justin Ruggiano (73) RF

Rickie Weeks (69) 2B

Jesus Montero (73) 1B

Willie Bloomquist (70) SS

Projected Rotation

Felix Hernandez (97)

Hisashi Iwakuma (86)

James Paxton (82)

Taijuan Walker (82)

Roenis Elias (71)

Key Bullpen Players

Fernando Rodney (84)

Danny Farquhar (81)

Charlie Furbush (82)

Tom Wilhelmsen (77)

1. Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals will be the favorites to win the World Series, easily.  They have, by far, the best rotation in baseball and it could possibly go down as one of the greatest rotations ever.  With the huge signing of Scherzer, the Natitude faithful should be excited once again to use their team online this year.

The rotation has 3 guys at 90 overall or higher and the number 6 pitcher, Tanner Roark, could easily be a number 2 for some teams; enough said.

The Nationals will miss the left handed power bat of LaRoche, but getting Ryan Zimmerman back from injury and placing him at 1B can surely replace LaRoche.  This lineup will be extremely balanced 1-8 with no real holes.  It doesn’t even matter how you set this batting lineup, because it’s composed of good contact/power throughout.

Harper fell all the way down to the low 70’s with last roster update from San Diego Studios in MLB 14.  I am not sure the reasoning to bump him back up to an 82 overall, but I won’t argue with it.  Harper still possess some of the most raw ability and power in the game.  Do not be surprised of Harper has his power back vs RHP to start the season and you can expect to see it in that 70’s range.

Rendon also had an amazing year last year and stepped up when Zimmerman got injured.  He hit 21 home runs with a .473 Slugging average, so you should expect to see his power and contact to be near the 80’s.

The one weakness with this team would be their bench.  Espinosa does not really possess power nor is he a competent bat off the bench.  The Nats also signed Uggla, but he may or may not be on the MLB roster. Moore is looking good in spring training and he could become the Nationals’ most dangerous threat off the bench.  Other than that, there is not much home to write about with their bench.

The bullpen should still get the job done, even with the loss of Clippard.  Roark will probably be one of the game’s most useful long relievers and you may want to even try him out in the setup role.

The Nationals will be used a lot for online and I expect the same this year.  Do I even need to tell you guys to give them a try?  I think everyone will be aware of the Nationals hype the media and fans are giving them, so we might as well jump on that bandwagon!  In all seriousness, give them a try, especially if you need to throw a number 3-5 starter.

Recommended Lineup

Denard Span (79) CF

Anthony Rendon (86) 3B

Jayson Werth (87) RF

Bryce Harper (82) LF

Ryan Zimmerman (82) 1B

Ian Desmond (87) SS

Wilson Ramos (80) C

Yunel Escobar (76) 2B

Key Bench Players

Danny Espinosa (68) 2B

Nate McLouth (70) LF

Tyler Moore (69)1B

Dan Uggla (65) 2B

Projected Rotation

Max Scherzer (94)

Jordan Zimmermann (91)

Stephen Strasburg (91)

Doug Fister (86)

Gio Gonzalez (85)

Key Bullpen Players

Drew Storen (80)

Matt Thornton (79)

Jerry Blevins (77)

Tanner Roark (79)

Personally, I tend to favor good offenses over good pitching for online games.  You can usually pitch better than what a certain pitcher’s ratings may be, especially if you are good with a certain pitching interface and you mix up your pitches well.  I also tend to favor Power over Contact, since a lot of the run production online comes via home runs and doubles.  These are the teams I recommend for online rated, so the depth of the pitching staff is just as valuable as having 1-2 aces.  In online rated stamina is a factor, so you cannot use an “Ace” every game.  There will be games where you will have to use a 4th or 5th starter.  This is one of the reasons I valued the Dodgers and Nationals so high.

What will be some of your most anticipated teams to use online and why?  Feel free to share your teams, agree with the ones I picked, disagree, or even criticize the teams I chose.  Stayed tuned for more MLB 15 The Show Tips once the game drops. Good luck to you all in your own virtual opening day!

NBA 2K15 Tips: How to Attack with Pick and Rolls as the Screener

Struggling to score at a high rate from Pick and Rolls? Don’t overuse the ball handler; instead, focus on attacking with the roll-man. Check out Sam Pham’s new Roll-Man Attack below to take your pick and roll game to the next level ^_^

Scoring as the ball handler coming out of a pick isn’t as effective as it once was (anyone remember 2K9’s pick and roll dunkfest ?). If we are to dominate with pick and rolls again in 2K15, we need to learn how to properly combine them with the freelance offenses available.

In the video above, you will see me using Anthony Davis as the roll-man to produce ridiculous results. From an advance stat point of view, the NBA’s deadliest roll-man in real life is Tyson Chandler. Chandler produces at a point per possession rate of 1.39 every time he attempts a shot out of a pick and roll. By comparison our 2K15 Anthony Davis, playing in Sam Pham’s Roll-Man Offense, was able to produce at a point possession rate of 1.97. Our AD scored 47 points out of the 24 times he caught a pass and took a shot via pick and rolls. On top of it all, AD also made 10 assists as the roll-man coming out of picks. Anthony Davis had an offensive stat-line of 59 pts and 12 assists on HOF SIM Difficulty.

This offense I have designed is deadly efficient, the secret? Make sure you set your freelance offense to 3-2 Space the Floor when you are planning to pick and fade. Secondly, you need to understand that fading to the side or to the middle makes huge strategic differences. Last note, if you are planning to pick and roll then the freelance offense will need to be switched over to 4-1 space the floor. The video above will explain these in further details, so make sure you check it out.

MLB The Show Tips:  How to Use Each Pitching Interface

This guide will show you walk you through pros and cons of each of the pitching interfaces in MLB The Show.  Remember that each person may just simply prefer one interface over another.  I am not trying to persuade anyone to use a specific interface, rather I am just trying to give my opinions and personal experiences with each one!

Let me bring it up again.  PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.  Take advantage of practice mode to experiment with the interfaces, different pitchers, and settings.  If you want to bump up your pitching difficulty from All Star to HOF you may want to go into practice and try it out first.

Classic Pitching Interface - I consider this to be the most “sim”, but it also requires the least amount of user input.  These interfaces goes directly off your pitching attributes such as; H/9, BB/9, K/9, individual pitch control, break, and velocity.  The only input you have on classic is when you are pitching the ball.  You can hold down “X” to try for more velocity/break, but it will be less accurate.  If you tap “X” you will have more accuracy, but less break/velocity.  This interface is recommended for either offline sim results or online leagues with sim settings.  I don’t recommend this for competitive play.

Pulse Pitching Interface - I consider this one to be another low risk/low reward interface.  The goal is simple for this interface.  Try to minimize the pulsating circle as much as possible for the most accuracy.  The ball will go anywhere in your final circle, so if you expand it all the way it can literally go anywhere.  Again, I don’t recommend this for online, unless you are completely struggling with Analog or Meter.  One key advantage these interface has is that it makes it easier to hold runners and your “bunt dancers” online will not affect your accuracy.  Classic and Pulse both allow you to execute your interface before the pitch is released, thus making it easier to hold runners.  A big disadvantage for both of these interfaces is the fact you have little to no control of how hard you want to pitch the ball.

Meter Pitching interface – This interface is probably the most used.  It has been used since MVP created it back in 2003.  It allows you to have the most control over break and velocity.  If you want to get some more heat on your fastball or a little more break on your breaking balls this interface allows you to do so.  The drawback is that it becomes increasingly difficult to control your pitches once you try to increase your velocity and break.  This is why I consider it a medium risk/high reward.  I definitely don’t consider meter to be that difficult, hence why I put “medium risk”.  Keep in mind, input lag can affect your precision on meter pitching.  So make sure your TV is in game mode or try a smaller TV.  Also, be aware that the online “bunt dancers” can affect your timing with the meter and it is a bit more difficult to hold runners.  These are minor drawbacks to me, however.   I definitely recommend this interface if you are familiar with how it works.

Analog Pitching Interface - This is my most preferred interface.  I consider it to be high risk/very high reward.  If you get good with analog pitching then you can pin point. Of course, it takes a lot of practice.  What I did to get good with Analog pitching was I made a RTTS Pitcher and I only used Analog.  I also got Kontrol Freeks for more grip and it has helped as well. This interface also does not punish you if you miss your spot.  If you set your ball marker to throw inside and you completely miss and hit the outside corner then the pitch will still go that outside corner.  Unlike other interfaces, if you messed up your interface execution then the ball can randomly go anywhere.  Press the Analog up faster for more break and velocity.   This interface will probably take the most time to learn.  Some are a little bit better with using the Analog, while others it takes awhile.  Practice, practice, and practice!!!

I hope these MLB The Show Tips have helped some of you.  Remember to give them all try.  You will never know if you don’t like a certain interface unless you try it!  If you have anything to add or would like to just comment, please do so!

NSFL Season 3 (2017) Playoff Preview

It’s that time of year again that everyone has been waiting for…..PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS?? YES…..THE NSFL PLAYOFFS! There are a ton of marquee matchupS this year that will have everyone on the edge of their seats and glued to the Twitch streams! Here is my take on what’s gonna go down.

NFC

image1.PNG

#1. Arizona Cardinals with a ridiculous 1 loss record going into week 17 “14-1″ and with MVP candidate Andre Ellington has solidified home field advantage which will make it tough for any opponent traveling to the desert.

#2. Green Bay Packers who comes into the playoffs as hot as any team in the league, they are riding a 12 game winning streak and with MVP front runner Eddy Lacy leading the charge I think the only thing that can slow them down is the bye week.

#3. Dallas Cowboys coming in the 3rd spot is a surprise to many. All year they were top dog but down the stretch they lost 2 of their last 4. Can T. Pryor and that high powered offense right the ship? Only time can tell.

#4. Atlanta Falcons with the worse record in the playoffs they come in as the classic “get hot at the right time” team. Beating two quality playoff teams on the way to clinching the NFC South and with the leading wideout in the NFL Desmon Cook, nobody wants to play the Falcons!

#5. St Louis Rams with a 12-3 record going into week 17 and with 2nd year QB Ono Neal still trying to find his way in the NFL, the Rams held their own in the tough NFC west. Was surviving in one of the toughest divisions in NSFL enough to prepare them for a deep playoff run?

#6. Two teams one spot remain for the final playoff spot. First Minnesota Vikings are on the outside looking in needing help with a 11-4 record going into a showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. After losing the SuperBowl in OT I would think not, having a chance to get back would hurt just as much. Second the 49ers also with a 11-4 record, control their own fate. Win and they’re in, even after dropping two of their last three. They play the NSFL’s best Arizona Cardinals who might just rest their players. Whoever gets the last spot I think will have a hard time advancing to the next round as there is some tough competition in the NFC.

AFC

image2.png

#1. Denver Broncos with a 13-2 record clinching the #1 seed in the AFC, which is impressive in itself but with a rookie head coach, first year starter playing QB and a shaky offensive line one has to wonder will the inexperience catch up with them?

#2. Cleveland Browns with a 11-4 record going into the final week and after back to back, yea I said it back to back Super Bowls. They gotta be the favorites right? Well after a coaching change late in the season one has to question can they make it 3 in a row? They are still stacked and primed for a deep playoff run, and with “money” Manziel behind center anything is possible.

#3. Buffalo Bills with a 11-4 record clinched a playoff spot. With their high octane offense led by E.J. Manuel are back in the playoffs again. They have the playoff experience but will that be enough to get them over the hump? Watching this team all year from a far, I think this just might be their time.

#4. Jacksonville Jaguars with a 9-6 record entering the playoffs the Jags will get a home game, which is always a good thing but winning a underwhelming AFC South one has to wonder what are they gonna do in this years playoffs? I got news for you, the Jags did nothing but improve week in and week out. Going into Jacksonville for wildcard weekend won’t be easy. Archie Bailey and company will ready!

#5. Kansas City Chiefs with a 13-3 record they are no ordinary five seed. With one of the most dynamic running backs in the league Jamaal Charles the Chiefs are a dangerous playoff team. Playing in one of the toughest divisions in the league this year they held their own. With one of the best defenses in the league and a great ground game, I expect the Chiefs to travel and make noise this playoffs.

#6. San Diego Chargers with a 10-5 record going in to the final week The “SuperChargers” are a surprise to everyone. In what was suppose to be a rebuilding year, under new coaching staff lead by “The Natural” the Chargers have over achieved. They have a top 5 offense and a top 10 defense. They have to be a scary matchup for any opponent. I think the Chargers will give someone hell in the first round and possibly further, keep an eye on this team I’ve got a good feeling about them!

NSFL SUPER BOWL

image3.png

After a great season of intense competition this is the time of year that gets every madden players juices flowing. This is why we play, to watch your guys raise the Lombardi Trophy. So after watching you guys all year I think I honestly think after a amazing season there is no way the Cardinals don’t make the Super Bowl out of the NFC. Coming out the AFC after a few years of coming up short I think the Buffalo Bills will break through and finally make it to the Super Bowl.

MLB The Show Pitching Tutorial

Are you struggling shutting down hitters online?  The answer to this….is probably not.  Online Baseball has always favored the pitching, because to most people hitting is always the most difficult thing.  On the other hand, you will face a good hitter every now and then.  This is when you have the opportunity to separate yourself from the good pitchers from the great. Do not think for a moment that your 2.50 ERA is good enough?  You can always get better, checkout the video below and article below!

The AI is a bit of a different story though.  The AI is a little bit more random to pitch to, but there are certain tactics you can use to improve your game and lower that ERA.  These tips will be for both online and offline, once again.

  1. Establish your fastball! Online or offline the fastball is the most important pitch. It sets up everything.  Whether it is a high fastball setting up the curve, low fastball setting up the change, or inside/outside fastball setting up a slider/slurve it is essential you show your opponent your fastball.

  2. Check your opponent’s feedback on each pitch, especially for online play. If you notice your opponent is late every time on a fastball then keep throwing them! If he is early on your fastball or has normal timing then throw more offspeed.  Pretty common sense stuff, right?

The feedback for the PCI placement is off for online play, but it also shows you their contact feedback.  Sometimes it may say under, over, outside or inside.  Pay attention to this!  If you throw a slider low and away (righty on righty) and your opponent’s swinging time says early/inside then you know he was looking fastball.  If it says late/outside on an inside fastball then you know he was probably looking for that slider.

  1. Pick up what type of hitter your opponents are. Some guys literally never move the PCI, some use analog, some set their PCI only low, some mix it up, and some try to “track” the ball. Try to figure out early on what type of hitter they are and pitch accordingly.  The feedback and how well they hit certain pitches should tip off what kind of hitters they are early on in the game.  If they mix up their PCI placement then you will want to mix up your pitches the best you can.  If they leave it one spot then attack their weakness until they prove they can hit it.  For example, a lot of guys sit their PCI low the entire game.  Well then you should be focused on attacking the high portion of the strike zone.  Keep attacking until they change their approach.  The first inning should be the time when you try and solve what type of player your opponent is.

  2. Do not be afraid to throw high offspeed pitches! (This is for online only) If you never throw a high breaking ball then they will never swing at high fastballs. Also if you have a hard slider a long with a curve then your slider can also offset their timing when you throw both pitches high in the zone.  An example of this would be to throw a high curve that just drops in for a strike then throw a hard slider at the same spot, but this time the slider will stay higher and get on the hitter faster to mess up their timing.  High changeups can also be effective every once in a while if they have a quick bat.  Be careful when throwing these pitches, but you should try and mix them in a few times a game.

Other Key Tips

  1. Pay attention to the confidence bars! This is huge in MLB The Show. I don’t necessary agree with San Diego Studios to make it such a difference maker, but it is what it is fella’s.  There are several ways to increase, as well as decrease confidence.

  2. Use the mound visits! Seriously they are there for a reason. Once your pitcher gives up a homerun or a key hit then do a mound visit.  Remember you only get 2 mound visits per inning for each pitcher then you have to remove them on the 2nd mound visit.  Using mound visits at a crucial time can increase their overall confidence (different from individual pitch confidence) and it also allows your guys in the bullpen to warm up faster.

  3. Look at the hitters’ hot/cold zones and their spray charts. This probably is more applicable for offline, but it can work online as well. SDS did confirm that hot/cold zones can matter as they a marginal increase/decrease to the hitters’ overall hitting attributes.  This means it is probably less than a 5% change, but that can be the difference between a long fly out and a homerun.  Attack the cold zones offline.  Online don’t get predictable with attacking them, but keep them in mind.

Spray Charts is something that people probably pay no attention to.  If you hit the middle button on the PS4 you can look at the hitter’s spray chart and tendencies.  If you see they are a dead pull hitter with 50% pull tendencies then pitch away!  You will see very few push hitters, but there are quite a few of balanced hitters.  If you see either one of these hitters then try to jam them inside.  Again, this is more of an offline approach, but it can impact online as well.  For example, every time I face the Jays online/offline and they have Bautista/Encarnacion batting back to back I throw cutters/sliders away.  It works quite well.  The game implements a reward system for when you time the pitch according to your spray charts and it will also punish them a bit for trying to do the opposite.  This means that a hitter like Bautista will not have nearly as much power when he tries to hit it opposite field.  Take advantage of it.

This brings me to my next point…….

  1. Pitch to the Shifts! The CPU automatically shifts for the left handed dead pull hitters. This will contradict what I said previously, but if you want to take advantage of the shifts (you can turn auto shifts off in the gameplay settings) then pitch inside to these hitters.  I know Ortiz, Mccan, Teixeira, Lind, and Fielder are dead pull hitters where your fielders automatically implement a shift.  Whether it is online or offline, pitch soft inside.  If you don’t feel comfortable doing so then turn the shifts off.  If you want to do the same to right handed hitters then you can implement the same shifts manually!  This can definitely add some innovation your game online/offline and get into your opponents head.

  2. Use the Warm up feature. This allows you to get your confidence up with individual pitches. You can turn it off and on in the settings.  It will always be turned off for online play.  I highly recommend to use it for offline though.  It allows you to get your individual pitch confidence up.

MLB 15 The Show Tips:  Zone Hitting 101 and Hitting Approaches

Are you struggling at the plate? Are you in that slump we all go through?  Well here I will show you how I hit with the zone hitting interface and some approaches you guys can use your own.  Hopefully this will juice up your run production and give you a jump on your friends when MLB 15 The Show releases!

I have had a lot of online and offline experiences.  All of these tips and approaches I share can be applicable for both online and offline.  In all honestly, online it is easier to hit because most humans become predictable.  However, you can use all of these tips I give you for your offline hitting, regardless of your difficulty settings.

First thing’s first….practice makes perfect….right?  I wonder how many of you guys have had actually took advantage of the practice mode?  Anyways it is a great way to get some good swings in and refine your approaches.  First tip….USE THE PRACTICE MODES.  There is bat control, plate discipline and good at bats.  I recommend plate control the most since it helps with your timing and PCI placement.

Secondly, make sure you have a good hitting camera.  This can make a huge difference.  Most people will just stick with the default camera and have never even tried some of the others.  Experiment and see which ones you like.  The more zoomed you are the better you can read strikes/balls.  Trust me it makes a difference.  Something else to keep in mind is make sure you are eye level with the pitcher’s delivery, so adjust your TV and chair/couch.  Do not sit too low or too high or it will affect your ability to read pitches.  I recommend a nice office chair and if you cannot afford that then try a lounge chair.

Third, put your TV in game mode or spend a little money to get a better TV suited for video games.  I use a 24 inch BenQ.  Anything over 24 inches and there will be input lag (means you have more time to react).  Again make sure you have a good setup.  Don’t sit your TV too high or on the ground either.
Fourth, try out some analog extenders like Kontrol FreeksThey help with you literally everything in the game.  Not only do they help with grip, but they allow you to be more accurate with your PCI when hitting.  It may take some time to get used to them, but they will only benefit you in the long run.  Do some research to see what you may want. I recommend using the CQC Kontrol Freeks.

Next…have a game plan when you go up to the plate.  Take pitches early on, especially with no runners on.  Mix it up when you swing first pitch or when you are taking.  Sometimes I win games due to patience alone.  You don’t need good plate discipline to be patient.  Anyone can set their controller down and see pitches.  I recommend while taking pitches to practice putting your PCI on the ball with your Left Stick.  This way you are killing two birds with one stone.   Other than that, know your situations.  Do not be afraid to use contact swing if you have a runner on 3rd less than 2 outs and it is a key run.

Lastly, MOVE YOUR PCI!!!  You will never get better by never moving your PCI aka “center swinging”.  I am not saying to never center swing, but your opponents (good ones) will pick up on your tendencies and not throw you anything to hit.  You may get lucky here and there and get mistakes, but this is not a consistent approach.  Move your PCI up/down and inside/outside based on your opponent’s pitching tendencies, your strengths, and their strengths.  If the count is 2-0…don’t look for some changeup down and away.  Look for a pitch that you can do some damage with (Inside fastball or hanging curve).  I see so many solid players limit themselves online because they are afraid to move their PCI and mix it up!  You will only get better in the long run if you start moving your PCI.  Trust me.

Look for more tips as MLB 15 The Show approaches.  I am going to be doing an in depth hitting guide for the new hitting interface “Directional Hitting” when MLB 15 The Show releases. I hope these tips helped and be sure to share and comment below!  Good luck out there!

Looking to get more VC? This guide should help you get it much faster and cheaper than previously!

After completing some of the team collections you will receive 25,000 MT. What you’ll need is 10,000-15,000 MT so you will be able to buy all of the starters on the team. Buying most players won’t cost more than 25,000 so when you get to the end of the collection you can recognize that players like Casspi selling for 5,000. Create a new account on your console then get a Kings starter pack and put all of the players up for 500, then purchase the players on your other account. When you reach 25,000 MT sell all of the players and keep the better ones like DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. The starter packs will work for buying other players for 500 and selling them for more.
