NBA 2K15 Final Roster Update Released

Interview with Madden NFL 16 Creative Director Rex Dickson

We were very grateful that Madden Mastermind Rex Dickson took time out of his busy schedule to discuss all of the improvements and hard work the team has put in this year into Madden 16 including Draft champions, QB play, new catching mechanics, and “money plays”.

The Natural: This is The Natural with Sports Gamers Online here, I’m super happy, super excited to be here, Rex Dickson, the creative director of the game EA Madden NFL 16, we’re here at E3, they got the game play here, and we’re playing the game, we love it so far, tell us a little bit more about the game.

Rex Dickson: We’re so proud of this game this year, we really busted our ass, tried to move the needle in a big way. Obviously, the big theme in gameplay is to be the playmaker, the air supremacy theme, new catching mechanics, new DB mechanics, new passing mechanics. I like to feel like we revolutionized the passing game in Madden this year, and once you get into the subtleties of the three different catch mechanics and the multi-player catch outcomes, see this is a very different Madden; more fun with the ball than ever before. On the defensive side of the ball, I’m super happy about gained tackles, we finally got organic game tackles in the right way, not the protract way. And we’re super happy about that, it took us three years to get to that feature, and I think we knocked it out of the park. And then our new mode is fun as hell, I mean, everyone loves to do the draft and in the fantasy draft, you get legendary players and it’s going to be a big hit for us.

The Natural: Yeah, the fantasy draft, they have a whole side dedicated to that, it looks really great, hop in draft your team and you know, jumping into action really quickly, switch teams around, really awesome feature, players are going to love it! Do you feel like that’s going to get more people, like myself, that are not draft fans into draft a little bit more?

Rex Dickson: Actually, I don’t think our intent was really to bridge to modern, our intent was for people that have kids and have very busy lives and don’t have a chance to really put 300 hours into a CFM dynasty or something like that, if I just want to come home and gain a quick experience and be done in one night, that’s what draft champions is all about. Draft a team, play four games, you’re done, be done in one night, that’s the whole intent behind it.

The Natural: Awesome, it’s an awesome new feature; you guys are going to love it there. Well, as far as the wide receiver and the DB interaction, it seems to be the huge focus this year, how you do kind of differentiate some of the upper-rated quarterbacks and the lower rated guys to, you know, put the passes where they need to go?

Rex Dickson: Well, interestingly enough, our highly rated quarterbacks play well for forever, what we really haven’t had is separation between different types of quarterbacks. Regardless of whom you’re playing, you pretty much get the same game from the AI, that has all changed this year. We’ve done a whole bunch of AI work on quarterbacks, making sure that scrambling or dual threat quarterbacks will use that, will be with it if you run and stuff like that, as well as pocket passes are just so precise, they can just carve you up. Guys like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, so depending on who you’re playing against, you’re going to get an entirely different game from the computer this year, and it’s really like revolutionized the game and it makes it feel like, you know, you never know what to expect and you’re always going to be challenged, and it’s one of the best things about the new Madden 16.

The Natural: Awesome! We’re super excited to play the game, and last year, the defense was so much improved on zone and man coverage, do you feel that this new catch animation kind of gives the offense a little bit of edge now in this year coming back, because the defense is just so good now?

Rex Dickson: Uh, no, because the new multi-player catch animations are equally balanced. For every offense win, we have an equal defensive win that counters that same move set, so, you know, you could throw one up now and instead of getting face caught on in defense, a multi-player triggers and may trick the ball out and it gets picked. So, it’s a very balanced feature, and we’ve relaxed the break on throwing a little bit this year so that, you know, people weren’t throwing six or seven picks a game, but we did go in and we fixed defender catch chances, so you won’t get the wide open hook ball drops anymore, still really important to make good reads here, but feeling those unfair undercuts where they break as soon as your arm goes back and past the ball, that’s been massaged a little bit.

The Natural: Oh, great, because people complained, you know, a lot about jumping 40 feet in the air, but you guys fixed that, and you know, now cutting over from under three, that’s the one people get pissed off with, that’s great. It’s awesome seeing you guys pay attention to the community and see how that plays out. So, one thing that you guys improved is the running and the blocking last year, and it was great when you had to run the ball, but some presets like pistol and Travis were a little overpowered in the running game, did you guys kind of look at that a little bit this year?

Rex Dickson: Every year we look at the most overpowered money plays, we’re watching a problem stream, you know, and he’s running PA power O every single play and as developers, that really pisses us off, we’re like ‘why is he running this one play over and over, this isn’t a balanced offense!’ We want to see people play football, we don’t want to see them play madden. So, we worked really hard to make sure that those money plays are out of the game or nominalized, forcing you to really run a balanced offense of run and pass and use authentic football strategies instead of a one-money play that you use over and over again that unstoppable.

The Natural: Plus, it’s so tough balancing that, because you have to make it real football, but have it be fun, you know, but maybe not the hardcore guy, so it’s really such a challenge for you guys every year to balance that, you know, those things.

Rex Dickson: Yeah, you know, it’s interesting, we have a bunch of tournament hardcore guys on staff and I always thought that they would get upset by things like us taking away little glitch moves and other stuff they could do with the stick and rocket catching and face catching, but honestly, their reaction is ‘as soon as I realize I can’t cheat anymore, I start playing football,’ and that’s what we want out of everybody. It’s like once we remove all of the cheats and all of the exploits, everyone’s going to be forced to play football with real strategy, and that’s when we know that we’ve gotten there; that’s where we’re going.

The Natural: A little shout out to my boy RG there, but thanks, we appreciated having you and talking to us, we really love the game and we’re looking forward to playing more this year.

Rex Dickson: Thank you very much!

The Natural: Thanks!

Interview with Madden NFL 16 Creative Director Rex Dickson

EA Sports E3 2015 Hands on Impressions

2015 marks SGO’s first year at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo and it is the biggest and most important of its kind in the world. Gamers, developers, media outlets and pretty much anyone involved in the industry flocks from all over the globe to this event to essentially celebrate their “Super Bowl”. It is a great place to make connections, ask developer’s questions and capture the latest content released regarding games bound to be released in the following months. I spent most of the day in the EA booth, which doesn’t resemble your traditional booth but rather a theme park styled digital playland filled with hundreds of flat screens, consoles, a gigantic Star Wars prop, squishy carpet and hundreds of people. Because I play pretty much any and all sports games, the EA booth is where I needed to be at E3 to soak up the entire 2016 sports catalogue EA Sports has to offer. Here are a few thoughts on the games I got a chance to play:

MADDEN 16

madden16_cowboys_dezMy first impression of Madden 16 was how polished it looked. We are still roughly 2 months away from launch and the game is currently in the alpha stage. However, spending a good 2+ hours in the Madden booth, I hardly noticed any goofy things going on and that is a great sign. This could be due to the fact that EA pretty much has laid a solid foundation when it comes to gameplay and is now focusing on smaller refinements this year. Presentation wise the game looks much like it did last year with a few added goodies such as players patting each other on the back after a great play and other nice little player animations that make these digital men seem more human. Another thing that really stood out to me was the fight for possession. At one point I saw Tony Romo throw up a 50/50 ball to Dez Bryant who was covered pretty well by the corner. Both players went up for the grab and both had their hands on it equally when Dez did what Dez tends to do in real life and rip it away from the corner for a spectacular catch that left me pretty speechless. It was a great moment and the gamers playing in that particular game went absolutely nuts. On the game mode side of things we got to check out a new mode called “Draft Champions”. It is a single player and multi-player mode geared for gamers who love to draft teams but do not have the time to put in 300+ hours on a Connected Franchise. It lets you draft head to head and gives you 3 players randomly to choose from in each round covering multiple positions and even legends. You will draft your core 10-15 players that you like to use starting with a coach and then you can take on your buddy’s freshly drafted squad. We completed our drafts in under 15 minutes and hit the field immediately making this a game mode I am extremely excited for. All in all I believe Madden 16 will build on the great game Madden 15 was and I am personally as excited as ever to hit the virtual gridiron this fall.

FIFA 16

fifa16_xboxone_ps4_e3_kane_hr_wmFIFA 16 was a much more scripted scenario inside of an enclosed room in which I first got to watch a presentation on new features coming to FIFA 16. A few highlights were the introduction of 12 national women’s soccer teams into the game, defending as a unit with defensive confidence in mind and increased defensive agility promising to deliver a much more balanced game on the pitch than in recent years. After the brief presentation I got to jump into an exhibition game and as far as menu features go, the game remained largely the same. On the pitch however, I noticed a much more fluid game defensively. Defenders seemed to stay with players, and players transitioned into offense/defense at a much more fluid pace than in years past. The A.I. also seemed much improved and offensive players didn’t get lost in open space as they did in FIFA 15. Another cool feature this year is the inclusion of off-the ball dribbling. This sounds like somewhat of an oxymoron as dribbling usually involves the ball but off ball dekes and fakes are used in real football and it is a great addition especially when getting caught in a 1 on 1 battle along the wings. Overall FIFA 16, much like Madden 16 focused on small incremental refinements making it an overall better user experience. Additionally users are able to turn on a tutorial style mode on the fly that shows inexperienced players of the game ways to succeed at the game with suggestions on smart plays. Overall, do not expect FIFA 16 to change the mold but rather build on its solid core with minor tweaks and perhaps open up doors to gamers who have never experience FIFA before.

NHL 16

nhl16_screen2The NHL 16 booth was shared with NBA Live 16 as well as Rory McIlroy PGA Tour making this more of a casual “pick-up the sticks and play” experience. I jumped right into an exhibition game with one of the developers and at first glance the games presentation was similar to last year’s title, which actually is a good thing. Full NBC TV presentations are back complete with a pre-game show and a pan into the arena animation. We played Maple Leafs – Sharks and the Shark tank looked alive. The crowds looked great and the arena was filled with native content such as “Sharkie” the mascot and the gigantic shark that descends from the rafters for player introductions. I was told that this is true for all NHL arenas and each and every one features some sort of authentic experience. The action on the ice was VERY impressive. One of the first things I noticed was a leading trajectory in front of the skater with the puck, showing the path of travel if passed or shot and it even included a proper trajectory if passing off the boards. That is a very useful tool and I found myself turning to it quite a bit. Skating was fluid and player physics seemed solid but not much different than last year. Board play didn’t receive a whole lot of attention according to the developer I spoke to and it seemed largely unchanged. Aside from that, the game seemed extremely polished in this Alpha build and with the return of EASHL and a slightly more polished looking Hockey Ultimate Team we may be looking at the return of this franchise come fall.

NBA Live 16

nbalive16_screen5Of all the EA sports titles featured at this year’s E3, NBA Live 16 made the biggest strides in my opinion. This is a game that started from nothing 2 years ago with NBA 14 and quite frankly was terrible and seemed more of a chore than an enjoyable gaming experience. NBA Live 15 made huge strides in a short amount of time and actually the franchise seemed to be trending in the right direction. Playing an exhibition game with a developer and getting a walkthrough on new animations, it left me incredibly impressed. As a guy who has turned to the NBA 2K franchise in the last decade or so for my sim basketball needs, I was blown away by the improvements made in just these last 2 years. Player movements seemed much more fluid than in any Live title, even prior to the “NBA Elite drought” and pick and rolls as well as pick and pops were easy to execute. The A.I. was also much improved with players moving well without the ball, setting screens for one another and actively trying to get open. I played a NBA Finals match between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers and player models looked great for the most part. All the star players looked like their real life counterparts and more impressive played like them as well. Lebron had a signature dunk that actually looked like a Lebron dunk and Klay Thompson stopped at the 3 pt line even on a fast break to drain a wide open three just as he would in the real NBA. All in all I was extremely impressed with this game and I seriously feel that this year may be the year that the NBA Live franchise can make a triumphant return to relevance.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour

rorymcilroypgatour_screen2Of all the titles in the vast EA Sports landscape this game is the closest to be released (July 14th) and looked very polished. Loading times are virtually gone with the inclusion of the Frostbite engine. The entire course is now loaded and allows for an open world type of experience. You can shank a shot and end up on another hole without being out of bounds, something previously unfathomable. I got to play 2 holes at TPC Sawgrass and the course as well as the golfers looked very nice aesthetically. The game features an “arcade” mode which analyzes the greens for players and makes it much easier to put as you always are asked to perform a full swing rather than manually adjusting the power of your shot. Additionally it takes the wind into account and the ball trajectory reflects that accordingly. Front and back spin is back and seemed a little overpowered but very useful. The arcade controls can be turned off to a “Pro” mode to make it a more sim experience as well which is great. Fantasy courses such as a Grand Canyon themed hole are also featured with mini-game type modes that ask players to complete different challenges such as launching a golf ball through floating rings using different types of power ups. This may seem very strange to the purist but I have to say it was actually very fun and a nice change of pace. Personally I am very excited for Rory McIlroy PGA Tour and can’t wait to pick it up next month.

As a guy who plays any and all sports games, I honestly got lost in EA’s world at E3 with so much to see and play. I hope you guys enjoyed this brief summarization of all the titles EA has to offer this season. We will have much more info, videos, interviews wrapping up E3 in the coming days. 5 Things I Learned Playing Madden 16 At E3!

In my first day at E3 I was able to play a lot of Madden 16 and also had the opportunity to talk to the developers that out the ones who actually make the game. In this time I was able to learn a ton about this years Madden and i am going to be sharing the top 5 things I learned in my time in the Madden Booth!

1.  Expect Some Awesome Animations From Wide Receivers And Defensive Backs!

In the four games i played there was at least one crazy animation in each of them and one of my favourite parts of the games was throwing up streaks to my tall receivers and just seeing what happened. The animations were incredibly realistic and you can tell the interactions in the passing game had improved a lot from previous years. You will be sure to have some highlight real plays in your games and this will make the game very interesting and add realism and a fun factor.

2. The Games Presentation Is Relatively Unchanged!

When I spoke to the games head of presentation I asked why the game looked relatively the same “ If its not broke don’t fix it” was his response and i do agree with this. Although I would like to be able to look at a new play call screen there were other areas that required fixing more that that area. So do not be thrown off by the presentation and label this game “ Just another roster update” because that is not the case at all.

3. Draft Champions Is Going To Be A Hit

When I first saw the Draft Champions trailer I must admit I was a bit skeptical but as I was in the booth watching it and playing it I realized how amazing this mode really was. With the popularity of fantasy football and how popular fantasy drafts have been in the past. The integration of a mode where you can draft in a creative quick way and then play immediately whether it be against a online opponent or solo challenges is going to be very popular. I don’t expect this mode to surpass the ever popular Madden Ultimate Team but it looked very good and could be a great mode for a long time!

4.Running The Ball Has Improved

Though there was relatively no talk in the trailer or conference the running game felt a lot better than previous maddens. When I was running the ball i noticed that there were many broken tackle animation some which I had never seen before in prior Maddens. Also in talking with one of the EA producers he told me about the integration of a new move where you can go go sideways through gaps to get into those small creases between the linebackers and d line. The juke moves also felt improved and I really felt for the first time in a Madden game felt I had total 100% control over my running back. Though this will be very over shadowed by the new catching animations a seasoned madden player will notice improvements.

5. Expect A Lot Less A.I Abusing!

I spend a whole game with another Madden competitive player trying out all of the stuff we had used or seen in prior Maddens. I found that everything i tried no longer worked the same way it used too. This means that this game may make the top players rely on a lot more football knowledge and less mastery of user skills and nano blitzes. It is however very early and I am sure top gamers will find a way to set themselves apart.

Madden 16 looks amazing and I really think that it will be a huge success if people can focus on the gameplay instead of dwelling on the lack of presentation. I hope you guys are as excited as I am for this game and expect a lot more content in the future!

Madden 16 Draft Champions Detailed and Interview with Producer Tom Lischke

We had the chance to speak with the producer of Madden NFL 16’s brand new Draft Champion mode Tom Lishke at E3 today. He gave us the inside scoop into what will be one of Madden NFL 16’s most played modes!

For several years, some of the most common questions and comments heard around the EA SPORTS studio were related to Fantasy Football.

“What are you going to do with Fantasy Football?”

“Madden NFL should be doing Fantasy.”

If you asked five different people, you’d get six different answers. The challenge is delivering the “core” fantasy draft experience without losing the on-field excitement that Madden NFL fans have come to expect. In Madden NFL 16’s Draft Champions, the team has delivered on both fronts.

The first thing our team did was take a look at the traditional Fantasy Football experience: a 12-16 round snake draft spread out over a few hours. While this can be a lot of fun with friends, it can be a really long event. Also, without the pizza, wings and trash talk, the experience loses something.

That format also has two downsides from a Madden point of view. Not only is it tough to organize that many people for a large event (just ask your Commissioner), but the actual time spent drafting players is very small.

Fantasy Football is a lot of fun, but we realized the Madden NFL version needed some tweaks.

THE GOAL

Having identified the challenges, we asked ourselves “What is the core fun of Fantasy Football that will work for Madden?” It is pretty obvious: Making the pick. Choosing the player that is going to carry your team. Draft night is the best part of Fantasy Football. The goal of Draft Champions was giving players draft night over and over again.

Draft Champions adds to the Fantasy Football experience by paying off draft night immediately. As soon as the draft is over, players can take the new squad onto the field. The result? A very tight draft experience that distills the best parts of Fantasy Football, and combining it with an exciting Madden event that can be completed in an evening.

Anyone who gets through a head-to -head gauntlet will truly be worthy of the title “Draft Champion.”

DRAFT NIGHT REIMAGINED

The team had four goals with the creation of Madden NFL 16 Draft Champions: Always on the Clock. Every Pick Matters. Keep it Tight. Replayable.

Draft Champions begins by picking from one of three coaches, which helps ensures each draft will be different and the pace remains high. Coaches determine a team’s offensive and defensive playbooks, and also defines two default “Styles,” typically one offensive and one defensive. Your team’s uniform is determined by your favorite team. Simply update the team choice to change uniforms.

A base team is then generated, which is playable but relatively low-rated. There is a group of players that are available for base team rosters.

While OVR ratings are similar, there will be some variety in the types of players that show up. Over time, Draft Champion players realize which players should stay, and which should be upgraded.

UPGRADING YOUR TEAM

Now comes the heart of the experience, drafting players to upgrade your team. Players have the choice of three players in each round, and with a limited number of rounds, each pick matters.

Every draft will be different; there may be a number of highly-rated wide receivers and half backs in one draft, and a number of safeties or linebackers in another. Every pick will be an upgrade over the base team, and Draft Champions will give players tough decisions in every round.

Unlike a typical draft, the quality of players to choose from rises and falls from round to round. One draft may create a defensive juggernaut, while another could create a power running game behind a dominant offensive line.

Let’s look at a couple sample rounds:

1. Which position is most important to me right now, CB, SS or TE?

2. Do I go for depth at WR or strengthen my line?

3. Which legend do I want to focus my team around?

4. Do I go for the higher rated player, or take a player to help my style rating?

A typical draft consists of 15 player rounds; the limited number of rounds mean that you are always on the clock and every pick is crucial. Experienced players will be able to move through the draft quickly, but Draft Champions includes tools to take a deeper look at players before making a selection.

The limited number of rounds and players per round also mean that every draft will be different. Players competing in Draft Champions can play repeatedly without ever building and/or facing the same team.

YOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

After the draft, it’s time to take the new squad onto the field. Choosing a Solo Draft gives players up to three games against AI opponents. With each victory, the quality of the competition will increase until the championship game in the brand new Draft Champions Stadium.

Players looking for a real challenge can jump into a Head-to-Head draft. While drafts happen independently, taking on the best players in Madden NFL 16 will provide the ultimate test for your drafting skills. Win four games in a row to become a true Draft Champion!

The number of games in each event are relatively low in order to preserve the “Madden Fantasy in a Night” feel for Draft Champions. Even if you get knocked out, you get to jump right back in and draft another team.

We couldn’t be more excited to get Draft Champions into your hands to see how we answered the question, “What does Madden do with Fantasy Football?”

Your Draft. Your Team. Your Championship.

Madden NFL 16 Full Gameplay Improvements and E3 Trailer

EA Sports announced a ton of new Madden 16 gameplay, improvements and modes today. Here is a roundup of all of the new info about Madden 16 as well as the latest gameplay trailer.
PENALTIES

Our hardcore simulation fans have been demanding realistic penalties for years. The team finally made this a point of emphasis in Madden NFL 16, and penalties will play a bigger factor than ever before.

In addition to several new penalties being added, we have updated all pre-existing penalties and built a system to control penalty frequency.

Every player is assigned a Penalty trait based on real-world NFL data, which determines how likely they are to commit a penalty; an undisciplined player has a far greater chance of committing a penalty than a disciplined player.

Players’ in-game strategy has an impact on penalties as well. For example, pressing cornerbacks are more likely to commit a defensive holding penalty, while goalline and max protect calls make offensive holding penalties more likely. Mistiming the “Off the Line” mechanic can easily draw a neutral zone infraction or encroachment penalty.

Finally, all penalty sliders have been updated to allow players to fully customize the experience to their liking. The Default slider setting is based on NFL penalty averages over the last five seasons to make both penalty type and frequency as authentic as possible.

Encroachment, False Start, Offensive Holding, Facemask, Defensive Pass Interference, Illegal Block in the Back, Neutral Zone Infraction, Defensive Holding, Illegal Forward Pass, Illegal Touching, Delay of Game, Kick Catch Interference Running into the Kicker, Unnecessary Roughness and Roughing the Passer.
PROCEDURAL AWARENESS HEAD TRACKING

As the Madden NFL franchise moves forward with its “Player Sense” theme, one of the biggest detractors was a lack of true head tracking for all players across all situations.

Madden NFL 16 includes added logic for QBs, RBs, WRs and defenders so that each head and eye track (the ball and players around them) uniquely based on their position.

Quarterbacks will scan the field for open receivers, ball carriers will alternate their gaze between incoming defenders, and players will track other players around them after the play. You may even see players looking up at the scoreboard on a breakaway run.
PRE, POST, AND DURING PLAY MOTION QUALITY

The quality of player motion has been a primary point of emphasis for the Madden NFL team for several years now. This year, we made huge strides in pre, post and during play motion quality. This touches several major systems like huddle break, walk to line, pile get up logic, pile avoidance, post play path finding and more. When it comes to in-game animation quality improvements, the list is endless.

Players can expect a dramatic reduction in pops, warps, slides, and other issues in Madden NFL 16. This will continue to be a focal point for us as we strive towards our goal of animation quality.

LEGACY ISSUES

In addition to all the new features being added, the team continue to address the feedback and concerns of our community.

A number of legacy issues have been addressed in Madden NFL 16, mostly around exploited mechanics or solidifying features meant to counter those exploits. Here are some highlights:

♦QB Spy logic updated (QB swerves the spy exploit)

♦Flip the Play to speed up huddle break issue has been addressed

♦Out of position subs causing exploitable routes has been addressed

♦Rocket Catching / Mossing / DB Glitches have been significantly reduced and/or eliminated

♦A large percentage of the known “nano-blitzes” have been removed

♦The PA End Around exploit play has been addressed.

♦Route swapping exploits have also been resolved.

♦A variety of ‘money plays’ have been revised or altered.

♦Resolved the friendly quit glitch for Madden NFL 16

PLAY BALL (BALL HAWK)

Play Ball (Ball Hawk) is back and has been heavily revised to ensure the most aggressive path possible to the ball. As with past years, the user plays the ball by holding the Y/Triangle button as soon as the pass is released. Play Ball is the best way to challenge the receiver for the catch, but comes at the risk of triggering a catch animation behind the receiver and giving up a big play.
PLAY RECEIVER (NEW)

New this year is the Play Receiver DB mechanic. Hold the A/X button once the pass is thrown to play the receiver. This drives you towards the receiver as opposed to driving you to a catch point.

Hit receiver can be used to dislodge the ball during the catch, but comes at the expense of not being able to trigger interceptions.
ORGANIC GANG TACKLES

Forget everything you remember about Pro-Tak. Madden NFL 16 delivers the most dramatic tackles in franchise history with a fully organic, physics-based gang tackling system. We now have fully realized momentum-based organic interactions on tackles that support a limitless number of defenders attaching to the ball carrier. The system is complemented by new dynamic gang tackle animations that can “go organic” based on additional defenders in proximity. We also worked on the stat-tracking side – Assisted Tackles and Half-sacks are now being tracked appropriately in the stats screen. It all adds up to the most authentic tackles ever seen in Madden NFL. Gang tackling is back!
OTHER TACKLING IMPROVEMENTS

While most players raved about the changes to tackling in Madden NFL 15, some users complained about feeling too much “suction” in the conservative tackle system. The team took this feedback to heart and tuned both the tackle cone and match distance to eliminate warping (or suction) from the tackling system without sacrificing control or responsiveness.

Aggressive tackles were also improved so that defenders always dive towards the ball carrier instead of just at his facing direction.
QUICK ADJUSTMENTS

Defensive quick adjustments give users the ability to adjust any of their defenders on the field without having to manually switch to the defender. Simply select the group (DL, LB, DB), choose individual adjustment, select the defender and set the assignment.

This addresses a long-standing legacy issue that put the defense at a disadvantage when it came to pre-play adjustments.
ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS

Madden NFL 16 also includes a few key defensive improvements demanded by the community. A few of the highlights include:

♦QB Spy logic has been updated to be more effective at stopping rushing QB’s

♦Contain Defenses and logic have been improved to help counter the new rollout and scramble mechanics

♦New mechanic where users can now make their defenders in spy assignment abandon the spy and chase the QB at any point in the play. This is done by clicking in R3 once he ball has been snapped.

♦Resolved an issue where users would not have time to audible to onside kick recovery when their opponents caught them in normal return vs. onside kick.

♦The offense can no longer use no huddle to consistently cause AI defenders to be called offsides.

We will have more Madden 16 info tomorrow live from the E3 floor!

You’ll have Confidence in Defending, take Control in Midfield, and you’ll produce more Moments of Magic than ever before. FIFA 16 – Play Beautiful.

Confidence In Defending

FIFA 16 gives you the tools to stop your opponent with confidence. Move with greater freedom as a defender – rely on your team to defend as a unit, and your back line to track menacing runs to create balance between attacking and defending.

Defensive Agility

Use 25 innovative feature changes to mobility and locomotion to track skilled players. Mobile defenders can close down space and change direction quickly using swing-step behavior to stay with your opponent. You’ll feel freedom of movement as you track runs and look to break up attacks.

Defend as a Unit

Defend together, win together. Rely on your teammates to cover gaps when you close down an attacker. New defensive AI gives players better awareness of dangerous space on the pitch relative to the ball and their opponent. Your teammates will track back to stop sophisticated attacking runs, and close down angles of attack.

New Tackling Fundamentals

Get stuck in and win back the ball with new tackling mechanics and animations. All new slide, standing, and fake tackles make going in for the ball responsive, rewarding, and fun!

Control In Midfield

Games are won and lost in the midfield – in FIFA 16, the midfield matters. Stay in possession with patient build-up play or ping clinical passes through space to start an attack.

Interception Intelligence

Players anticipate passes and move to shut down options and close passing channels. Smarter teammates will look for space and allow more opportunities to build play through the midfield.

Passing With Purpose

A revolution in passing. FIFA 16 lets you play sharp, incisive passes so you can find teammates with precision. Using a new mechanic, ping driven ground passes to find teammates in tight spaces to open up your attacking options.

Moments of Magic

Create more WOW moments. In FIFA 16 players will have that cutting edge every team needs to create moments of magic and unlock defenses.

No Touch Dribbling

The best touch can be the one you don’t take. Free yourself from the ball to buy time, create separation, feint, and blow by your defender just as Messi does when he is at his best – it’s near limitless creativity on the ball.

Dynamic Crossing

Send that cross in! Authentic crosses let you find teammates with greater accuracy. Attacking players run onto and attack the ball with intent, making defenses scramble as crosses are played behind the back line with vicious intent.

Clinical Finishing

Strike the ball right and finish like a pro. Better placement of the foot and ankle gives players variety in shooting and goals scored. You’ll be able to feel where the ball is struck and adjust your approach for improved accuracy and power.

NBA Live 16 First Look Gameplay Trailer and New Details

We were live at E3 to witness the brand new NBA Live 16 Trailer today and EA Sports also released new gameplay details on their NBA Live blog. Checkout the details below and the trailer above, enjoy!

PASSING

This was a sticking point in year’s past. Running a fast-break used to be a chore, but not anymore. For real though, they added a TON of new pass and catch animations. More variety means players move the ball with more intent — and it looks more natural.

They’ve also upped the responsiveness. In past years, you couldn’t really whip the ball around the perimeter – now – you can pull off various touch passes to put the ball where you want it. They’ve even gone as far to add dribble handoffs.

With all of these new tools on the offensive side of the ball – you’ll be a floor general like a BOSS. There’s not a possession that goes by where you won’t feel and see a notable difference.

DRIBBLING

NBA LIVE has always been about dribble control – so we are all pumped for the return of Freestyle Controls! NBA LIVE 16 really feels like you’re the one pulling off the moves – and not an animation sequence.

There are new controls for pulling off hesitation dribbles and crossovers, making attacking the basket buttery smooth now. Gone are the days of losing all your player’s momentum as you drive the hoop. That’s that physics engine putting in work!

SHOOTING

You aren’t winning if you aren’t scoring. NBA LIVE 16 has brought in a totally new shot system. The release timing is no longer tied to the animation, and is now tied one-to-one with the button press. If you release too early or late you’ll actually see and feel the difference.

Not everyone plays like Chef Curry jacking up 3’s from all over the court – so they’ve also improved a bunch of new signature animations when attacking the hoop or scoring around the basket.

OFF-BALL MOVEMENT (LIVE MOTION)

This feature will have the most notable impact. Remember when dudes would just stand around the court and not move or try to get open, unless you called a play? Those days are over.

Thanks to some revamped AI and what they are calling LIVEmotion – players move around the court with purpose and intensity. You’ll see your CPU buddies fight through screens, make intelligent cuts and more in attempt to get open – all on their own.

Animation quality has also taken a step up in a major way. Dudes won’t be skating all over the court now

And if that ain’t enough, check out some of the moves you can pull off now that you could never do before:

  • Touch passing

  • Dribble handoffs

  • Pick and Roll screen re-screen

  • Attack Ball Screens w/ New Dribble Mechanics

  • Deny NBA superstars away from the ball

  • Bump cutters

  • Push off and get open away from the ball

  • MORE COMING

Madden 16 Developer Tips: Pistol Strong Slot PA Slide

Madden 16 In-Game Creative Director Rex Dickson posted the first Madden 16 Tip of the year on EA’s Play to Live blog. These are the best clutch plays, straight from the Madden NFL 16 development team. Checkout the tip below, don’t forget to tune in to Sports Gamers Online as we will bring you exclusive coverage of EA’s E3 conference!

Recommended By: Rex Dickson, In-Game Creative Director

Play Name: Jets Pistol Strong Slot PA Slide

When to run it: This is a play action rollout or “boot” play. I use the scramble mechanic (hold RT on Xbox One, R3 on PS4) and the low pass mechanic (Hold LT+ Receiver Icon on Xbox One, L2 + Receiver Icon on PS4) to hit the comeback route. Due to the corner over the top and the proximity to the sidelines, I utilize possession catches (Hold A on Xbox One or X on PS4 with ball in air) exclusively on this route.

Madden16_Tips_Pistol_Strong_PASlide_jets_ingame

Why It Works: The Back releasing into the flat pulls down the underneath zoners, giving you a lot of room to work with down the sideline. The roll out shortens the distance between the throw and the receiver (vs. staying in the pocket), which creates a much shorter window for the DB to react to the comeback. Additionally, if everyone is covered scrambling is always a great check down option on this play.

MLB 15 The Show Consumer Friendly Patch 1.04 Fix

SCEA released a new MLB 15 The Show consumer friendly patch which addressing many small online and offline issues. Details are listed below.

Offline specific changes:

  • When using the Player Lock feature in Exhibition, Season, or Franchise modes, the user was unable to perform a dive or jump animation when inputting the command. This has been fixed for all modes.

Online specific changes:

  • During an online game, when a ball is hit directly at and fielded by the 1st baseman, tapping the circle button triggers the fielder to “take it himself” to 1stbase. This was resulting in the offensive user not seeing the fielder run to the base and tagging it. He would only see the fielder standing in place (where he fielded the ball) but the out would be recorded when the play timed out. This has been fixed on this version of the patch.

  • During an online game, in a very rare and timing specific situation, the game would post the wrong win/loss result if the very last out was recorded on a force out play at the same time a runner was crossing home plate (that would have tied the game). The most common occurrence of this involved the bases being loaded, and the last out being recorded at 1st base, just as the tying run would cross the plate. This has been fixed, and games will post correctly when ending on this type of play.

  • During an online game, a hang/standoff could occur if the batter called for a timeout at the exact time that the pitching user was giving the input to select a pitch type. This situation was rare, due to the timing, but encountered frequently enough to warrant code reconstruction to resolve this. This has been resolved on this version of the patch.

  • Within an Online Challenge of the Week game session, users were able to bat from an outfield/pitcher view perspective. This was giving users an advantage, as they could see where the catcher was setting up (giving away the pitch location). Users are no longer able to bat with an outfield/pitcher view perspective in Challenge of the Week mode.

  • Following an extended period of offline gameplay (resulting in the accumulation of XP and stubs), users were encountering an issue where their universal profile was syncing to a system level user, instead of a PSN user. Their amount of XP and stubs were not syncing as expected during the log-in process. This has been fixed.

Here is our full Interview with Axis Football 2015 Lead Developer Danny Jugan discussing Axis Games latest Axis Football 2015 release due out on Steam on 6/15/15. Checkout the full press release below detailing all of the great features and improvements in this year’s title.

Axis Football 2015 is a 3D American Football game (not a manager)! Greenlit on Steam and scheduled for release on July 15th, Axis Football is unique in that it is specifically designed to be played on the PC. This allows for a mouse-aimed passing system that adds unprecedented strategy and fun to the game.

Axis Football Overview

Axis Football is a high-quality, 3D American Football Game. Choose from 32 team and play in either season mode or a quick match. A great alternative to Madden, Axis Football features excellent controls and a unique mouse-aimed passing system that gives unprecedented accuracy and control of where the ball is thrown. Unlike the few other football games, Axis Football was specifically designed for play on a computer and takes full advantage of the mouse/keyboard controls.

Teams and Rosters

All 32 cities from the NFL are represented in Axis Football. Each team features its own ranking in passing, running, pass defense, run defense, and special teams. Additionally, each player in the game comes complete with their own stats for all of the various football metrics (speed, tackling, blocking, etc.).

New in Axis Football 2015

If you’ve played the 2014 version, you might be interested to hear of the features we’ve added in this year’s installment.

Randomized season schedules. No more playing the same teams in the same weeks every season!

Updated team stats. Some teams got better… some got worse! Find out how your favorite team fared.

Updated team rosters

Added end zone graphics to the field. The home team’s graphic will be shown.

Added Achievements.

Added Steam Trading Cards.

Updated / Fixed some animations. For example: we adjusted the animation for running with the ball to be more realistic.

Added Controller Support. You can now use your XBox 360 controller to play!

NHL 16 Q & A Part 6

The NHL 16 team continues to answer questions about the game at their Ask EA page. The Q&A is copied and pasted below for easier reading.

Will there be goalie injuries in off line modes?

If games are simmed during the off line modes there are goalie injuries. During gameplay we do not have goalie injuries.

Will single player tournaments be available in HUT 16 under “Play Solo”? This is the feature i’m missing most. As someone who loves playing the CPU, the tournament win bonus was the main reason I could actually build a nice team in earlier versions of NHL.

Hi Jason, glad you asked! In HUT 16, we are introducing Single Player Seasons for the first time. It has very similar aspects to the old Offline Tournaments with the ability to work your way through higher divisions. On top of this, we are also bringing back entry criteria to help keep things interesting.

Love seeing EASHL is coming back. My biggest complain with it is that it doesn’t play like any of the other modes / real NHL, no reason to dump for a line change, get on fresh players when stamina is low. It’s essentially a game no line changes enabled. Can we ever expect to see a line change feature in EASHL, so that the captain calls for a change, you skate to the bench and your player comes back out with fresh legs, more stamina? I’m not saying have reserve players or sitting on the bench, but just something that captures the flow of a game more accurately than skating around, always pushing into the offensive zone.

Hi TK, thanks for your question. Line changes is something that does come up in our design discussions. I can definitely see your point but it does have some design drawbacks that we have to be careful with. This is something we will continue to look into.

How will the draft look and will be able to pick our players/trade our picks or will it be simulated?

Last year after NHL 15 was released we put in a patch a whole new Entry Draft experience for our users, allowing users to make their own picks as well as trading their picks to other teams. This will be in NHL 16 for you to use to draft your up and coming stars.

What will we see in the way of tutorials for those of us new to the series?

In NHL 16 we have a new feature called On-Ice Visual Trainer which is meant to allow all players (regardless of skill level) compete at a higher level by teaching them the controls through visual aids. These aids are adaptive so that as you learn each of the controls, you continuously advance to more complex moves.

In NHL15 online team play is plagued with too many player collisions. Has this been identified as an issue to be fixed for NHL 16?

Yes, with the return of EASHL, there has been a big focus on balance and behavior making the game fun to play from every position in an online multiplayer space. Part of this has been tuning core gameplay elements/factors such as player physics and collisions. We have not only tuned the balance of how prepared players are in different situations for collisions but also added more variety in reactions at lower levels so that even when players do collide, they don’t have to be as extreme as they were in NHL 15. Small stumbles have helped these incidental collisions as well as allowed big power forwards to protect the puck when turning their back to a defensive player to absorbing impacts better.

Will teams sit on the correct players benches this year?

We have gone through all of the stadiums and tried to update them to be as authentic as possible. The art and rendering teams did an amazing job in NHL 15 capturing the architectural likeness of all of the licensed buildings but this year was more about taking them to the next level with behavior and interaction and they have met and surpassed the mark once again. In NHL 16 you will see players on the correct benches, using the proper tunnels for the home and away teams, updated banners to be as authentic as possible and many other stadium accents to add more life into each of the arenas.

Has any work been done to avoid pucks and sticks going through legs, net, board?

We are always adding improvements within physics for collision detection. We have also improved the detection of stick on stick & stick on body collisions to tune when pucks get dislodged/collide per game style. We have also added the ability to tune how stick on stick contact effects puck control from different angles to simulate the strength the defender would have vs. the offensive player. These are the types of improvements you can expect to see in NHL 16.

With the NBC package, will there be warm ups, league updates, player/coach interviews, national anthems?

For NHL 16 we have worked closely with NBC and have received great support to update the in-game broadcast package to better match the authenticity of what they rolled out this past January on their network. On top of that, Doc and Eddie will have a lot more pre-game analysis to cover your team and your opponents as you play through a season and for specific match-ups. We don’t have interviews this year but you will see the players skating around pre-game as the commentary team focuses on the teams/players complete with spot lights, team props raising to the rafters, crowd flags and unique effects whenever authentic to the team.

Has there been any server upgrades to help with lag issues?

Yes. With more and more people playing online every day, we’re continuously trying to improve our online experience.

Will Custom Soundtracks be possible in NHL16?

This year our focus was to get music to make our in-arena experience as authentic as possible. Unfortunately, Custom Soundtracks will not be in NHL 16.

Will be a Pro include the All-Star game?

The All-Star game will not be a part of Be A Pro this year however it is something we will continue to look into.
Can we expect to see any (big) changes for playing goalie, both in terms of gameplay and the overall experience?

Yes. In NHL 16 there is a brand new way to control goalies. We have added all new motion capture which allows for much more realistic motion when moving in the crease. You can now decide between controlled strides and longer t-pushes. If you want to track a single skater with the puck or push over quickly to track a cross ice pass, you now have the tools to do so. You are also accountable for your momentum so pushing back the other way in butterfly is different than pushing from a still position since you have to recoil first which makes you much more accountable for staying in control. We have also improved the ability to push into saves so that you don’t feel locked in or stopped by the AI.

Are there any goalie improvements this year like to the movement and save? And also when playing as them are there new saves for the button combos?

We are still finalizing the controls so can’t full comment on the new controls/abilities. However, in NHL 16 you will have more control than ever before when playing as a player controlled goalie. We have all new motion capture for goalies movement so that you can take both smaller strides and big t-pushes when you either want to re-position in the crease or make more committed moves to the opposite side to track cross ice passes. We have also put specific focus on ensuring players aren’t locked into saves when they want to continue to slide with momentum.

Is there anything new or improvements on Goalies (Human or Computer) in NHL 16?

Hey Johnny…in NHL 16 we’ve overhauled player controlled goalies as part of our efforts to make it fun to play from every position on the ice. You’ll now have new controls (which are still TBD in terms of button mapping) which will give a more authentic look and feel to the goalies. You’ll also notice that the AI goalies also have new animations and poses to refresh the look.

Rory McIlRoy PGA TOUR Online Modes Detailed

In their latest blog Rory McIlRoy PGA TOUR Designer Justin Patel details the new online features and modes in the upcoming game to be released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on July 14th. Video above and full details below!

ONLINE HEAD-TO-HEAD

Online H2H mode starts at the Online Hub. Players can toggle between playing Ranked and Unranked games, with Ranked games using an all-new matchmaking and shooter-inspired lobby system. Simply set your golfer and choose one of three base Gameplay Styles – Arcade, Tour, Classic – in the Ranked tab and join a session.

After being placed into a Ranked session, players will be paired up with those who have selected the same Gameplay Style. For Ranked games, the server randomly selects two courses (with randomly generated course settings) for players to vote on.

Voting closes ten seconds before the start of the match and the winning course will be set for the game.

Once on the course, all users will play through the round simultaneously. Gone are the days when online matches felt like you were playing alone. For the first time ever, other golfers will be rendered in the environment. Players will see (in real-time) when their competitors move or swing, and their golf ball will be visible flying through the air and rolling on the terrain.

When an opponent’s ball comes to a stop, their Online ID will appear for a few seconds to help you keep track of who is where. There’s also an all-new hole clock at the top of the screen, which replaces the individual shot clock. Players will have a set amount of time to complete the hole.

After finishing a hole, players will go into spectating and have the ability to toggle through different cameras placed on that hole to view their opponents as they finish. Once everyone is done, the group moves on to the next hole.

At the end of the round, players are given wins, losses and ties for how they fared against each individual user in the game. The group is then returned to the session screen, where two new courses are randomly generated for voting and another game will start.

Results from Ranked games all feed into new, restructured leaderboards. Performance is now tracked separately for each Gameplay Style, and wins, losses, level, rank points and other statistics will be specific to the Style you played. This means that each Style has its own top-ranked player.

Unranked games give players the freedom to set up the game with any course, settings, and even custom Gameplay Styles.

The Session Browser shows which Unranked games have created. Sessions are sorted by Gameplay Style, and display the host and available slots in each session. Search filters can help find the right game.

The Unranked session’s creator has the ability to start the session whenever they are ready. The creator can invite users to the session and edit the course, course settings, and Gameplay Style settings from inside the session.

ONLINE TOURNAMENTS

Rory_Mcilroy_pga_tour_online_tournaments

The Online Tournaments Hub is where players access everything in the mode.

Just like Online H2H, the mode is split up by each of the three base Gameplay Styles, with Daily and Weekly Tournaments provided for each Style.

Players can toggle between the Open, Closed, and Coming Soon tabs to enter a tournament, check past results, and see future tournaments.

Accessing an Open tournament provides a more detailed look at the course settings and leaderboard for the tournament. This is also where you start the tournament.

Players only get one attempt at an Online Tournament, so be ready to play. Once you play or quit out, you cannot enter again. This is the case for ALL Online Tournaments.

Just like Online H2H, Tournament leaderboards track each Gameplay Style separately. Stats include Winnings, Events Won, Top 5’s, Top 10’s, Top 25’s, Top 50’s, Top 100’s and Average Finish.

A WAY TO PLAY FOR EVERY HOCKEY FAN

Whether you’re an armchair GM, want to live out your NHL pro fantasy, or build your ultimate dream team, NHL 16 will deliver a single-player game mode for every type of hockey fan – each with new features that you’ve never seen in EA SPORTS NHL.

Be a GM: Player Morale

Being a GM is about more than just getting the best players, it’s about getting the right players to play well together. Each player on your NHL and AHL team has a different personality that you will have to manage. Deal with trade demands, teammate relationships, and much more by calling team meetings or adjusting your roster to directly affect your team’s on-ice performance.

Be a Pro: Shape Your Legacy

The way you play dictates the type of player you will become in an all-new Be a Pro progression system. On-ice actions directly influence attributes earned, ensuring that your Pro will reflect the way you play. Sim to your next shift and the ability to work your way up from CHL rookie to an NHL Superstar also make a return in NHL 16.

Hockey Ultimate Team: Single Player Seasons

The most played mode in the NHL series gets even better. Improved player management and the introduction of HUT Single Player Seasons gives you another way to hone your skills before jumping online with HUT Online Seasons or challenging your friends with the Play a Friend feature.

Visual On-Ice Training

Whether you’re new to the NHL series and looking for pointers or are a grizzled veteran trying to perfect your game, this new training tool will help sharpen your offensive and defensive skills no matter your talent level. Visual aids project shooting targets, passing lanes, open teammates, and more.

COMPLETE CONTROL FROM EVERY POSITION

Whether you play as a forward, defenseman or goalie, NHL 16 delivers a balanced gameplay experience that makes every position on the ice meaningful to team success. With gameplay innovation on offense and defense, players have new tools to not only score goals, but to prevent them as well.

Precision Skating

Utilize a new skating tool that allows you to make refined movements with your skater in any situation. On defense quickly jump into passing lanes and intercept the puck, or walk the blueline on the power play and open yourself up for that one-timer in the offensive zone.

Seamless Puck Pickups

The ability to quickly control a pass or corral a loose puck can be the difference between generating a scoring chance and getting leveled. New puck pickups result in smoother transitions when receiving the puck no matter what your position, giving you more time and control to make your next move.

Control the Crease

The fate of your team is at your fingertips with all-new enhanced goalie controls. Precision Skating captures the authentic look and feel of a goaltender’s momentum and precise movement as you control them in the crease. When the shots start flying, decide whether to make controlled positional saves or commit to high risk athletic saves that may leave you vulnerable to secondary chances.

UNRIVALED GAME DAY AUTHENTICITY

NHL 16 brings the game to life with distinct arena atmospheres, the most realistic players yet, and a story-driven commentary package to pull you into the energy of the game like never before.

Distinct Team Arena Atmosphere

Best in class arena authenticity gets even better with the inclusion of authentic arena effects and props including team specific celebrations, mascots, chants, and even signature props like the Lighthouse at the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota.

Story Driven Commentary

Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, and Ray Ferraro are back and now call the game with even more emotion. Hear Doc’s voice rise and fall with the action on the ice and get analysis from Eddie & Ray on the peaks and valleys of a NHL season. An expanded NBC SPORTS broadcast package and new pre-game intros brings the drama to life in more ways than ever before.

Superstar Authenticity

Enhanced facial features and new equipment details synonymous with the league’s top players adds another layer of player authenticity. Use these new equipment elements to customize your own created character giving them a unique look, from custom stick tape, colored skate laces, tinted visors, and more.
