Gaming"s Lost Features: Madden Mini-Camp Mode

Do you remember when Madden had Mini-Camp Drills?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E8IXbqeD7M

It was Madden 2003 that introduced Mini-Camp mode. Mini-Camp mode would put you in the shoes of an NFL player during Mini-camp, challenging you to complete training drills efficiently, aiming for a top score in order to unlock more drills. Some of the drills included Trench Fight, which would see you controlling a Defensive Lineman and demanded that you do all you could to get past the Offensive Lineman on your way to the Quarterback. Or how about my favorite: QB Pocket Presence, which would see you avoiding little, yellow dots as a QB while you stayed in the “pocket” and completed passes to one of three receivers.

Madden-Mini Camp Passing drill
The QB Pocket Drill helped work on passing and pocket awareness.

While these drills were fun and a nice change of pace, the thing most people enjoyed about the mode was seeing players in Training Camp gear. Seeing players in pads and shorts was a nice bit of immersion, and the training facilities were also something we hadn’t seen to that level before. Not only that, but Mini-Camp mode was a good way to practice the fundamental stick skills. Madden Mini-Camp was a nice new feature, but it was a fairly small part of Madden 2003. It wouldn’t be until the following year that Tiburon, the developers of the Madden franchise since the mid-90’s, would find an even more impactful use for their new mode.

For fans of Madden’s Franchise Mode, Madden 2004 was a large step forward. Not only did it introduce Owner Mode, with new features such as Team Relocation, but Tiburon took the Mini-Camp Mode they had debuted the year prior and found a use for it in Franchise Mode. During the off-season, you were given the option of running different players through all the Mini-Camp drills. The better you did in a certain drill, the more points you could assign to that player’s attributes. You were only allowed to do each drill once, forcing you to think about which players needed progression in that area the most. This was all on top of the well-balanced, natural progression and regression system that went on during the season.

Madden-Mini Camp Drills
Madden-Mini Camp offered a variety of drills to choose from.

One of the big features of Madden 2006 was an all-new Superstar Mode, where you would create an NFL Rookie and attempt to make your legend as an NFL player. In the mode, these mini-games were used to to evaluate your player’s talent level going into the NFL Draft. Superstar Mode was a fantastic feature, but we’ll save that for another time.

When Madden transitioned to the XBOX 360 and PS3, it seemed like Tiburon was not only keeping the Mini-Camp mini-games, but they were also improving and expanding on them. New drills were implemented, and the new and improved graphics showed off more detailed players in compression shirts. Things like weight benches and giant timing clocks accompanied the new drills like Bench Reps and the 40 Yard Dash. Despite the graphical overhaul, the drills were seen as much less fun than the drills seen in the previous generation of games. The mini-games continued in Madden for years, going largely untouched and never having the same influence on Franchise Mode as they once did. Finally, Tiburon ceased their inclusion in the game starting with Madden NFL 13, a game that was also controversial for re-branding Franchise Mode into Connected Careers.

Madden Mini-Camp Defense
Each position was covered by a different drill in Mini-Camp Mode.

If you look today, Madden NFL 16 gives you modes like Skills Trainer and The Gauntlet, both reminiscent of the ground-breaking Mini-Camp mode. However, Madden 16 could potentially benefit from the old model of Madden 2004.

One of the biggest complaints in current versions of Madden, as it pertains to Franchise Mode, has been the XP progression system. Starting with Madden NFL 13, the very game that removed mini-games, an XP reward system was put in place to allow you control over who progresses on your team and when. In Madden NFL 16, Drive Goals were introduced, which not only fundamentally changed how many played any given game in Franchise Mode, but also was a huge intrusion on the presentation, both in the game and in the menus.

Madden16_CFM_0.img
The current system focuses too much on individual goals.

The issue I see with this system is that we’re focusing too much on individual performances. Instead, we should be focusing on how our team matches up with our upcoming opponents and developing a gameplan around that. In it’s current form, most players are spending time looking through their roster, figuring out when to spend XP and game-planning on how to get their Tight End three touchdowns next game, instead of focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of the other team. XP and Drive Goals takes such a front seat during the regular season that most players can’t help but be drawn towards that. Sure, we can always decide to delegate XP to the CPU, but XP is so crucial to Tiburon’s design of Franchise Mode that the mode feels even more shallow without it; deciding to do that essentially gives you even less to do.

mini_camp_3 points
Could Minicamp be a fix to Madden’s Connected Franchise Mode EXP woes?

However, if Tiburon were to shine the focus of player progression on Mini-Camps and Training Camp just before the season, we could all focus on game-planning and what is going on around our league during the regular season. It’s a matter of immersion, and Mini-Camp mini-games could not only be a fun break from practice and games, but could also take the ham-fisted nature of XP and Drive Goals and turn controllable progression into a digestible system. You don’t have to necessarily copy Madden’s of the past, either. You could add a risk/reward system in Training Camps where the more you train any given player, the higher chance they have for injury. If replicating real world football is the ultimate goal, which has been stated by Madden Creative Director Rex Dickson, then this system should be looked at

seriously.

Mini-Camp Mode is a feature that is often forgotten, and with the way it was implemented in Madden over the past 5 years it was included in the game, it’s easy to see why. However, in a game that has a yearly release and having one of it’s biggest complaints be the staleness of the product, looking at features like this (a different way to play that uses the same core gameplay as regular games, but has an impact on career modes) is definitely worth discussing.

NBA 2K16 Defensive Tutorial: How to Stop the Pick and Roll

Welcome to my first defensive breakdown tutorial. Today, I will be introducing a technique I like to use to protect the paint and force your opposite toward the sidelines. My technique is called TAMAR (Take Away Middle And Recover), and we will be utilizing this by taking advantage of the ICE technique that is implemented in NBA 2K and adding in some of our own wrinkles.

Principles:

Force Baseline

Ice Screens

Limit Transition

70% On Ball, 30% Off Ball

Tempt defense to shoot long shots

Double on Drive with superstars only

Always have one weak offensive player to help off for PnRs

Take good shots and control the tempo

Def Controller Settings:

Shot contest: Intense Def

AI assistance: 15

Boxout assistance: 100

POEs:

Limit Transition

Conservative/Neutral aggression (Conservative to avoid more bail out fouls)

Neutral defensive focus (Never do Limit Perimeter or Protect the Paint to begin games)

Crash Def Glass

Universal Defensive Settings:

Force Baseline

ICE screens

No Hedge/Auto

3/4 Bottom for Post defense

Individual Defensive Settings:

Deny any shooters with 78+ 3 point shot

Play tight/deny on only one shooter or else you will have no help defense. For example, take away Klay Thompson when playing the Warriors.

Play moderate on ball with the PG, even if it is Stephen Curry. We can live with our opponents taking long contested 3’s in NBA 2K.

Gap/Gap big men who cannot shoot. This will help bring good help defense.

Play moderate on ball/off ball on anyone with less than 75 3 point or you can leave it on auto. This will also give us more help defense for the drives.

Play behind post either 3/4 or entirely behind.

Defensive Tips:

Play mainly on ball in the half court unless your opponent is turboing then bring some manual help or find a guard to help off of. Do not play 100% on ball or you will get burnt on occasion due to slight delay when switching defenders and leaving them out of position.

Never leave your feet unless you were burnt and you are attempting a block from behind.

Absorb contact in the paint and then feel free to jump at the same time if it a weak layup attempt, but try to stay on your feet most of time.

There will be times where your opponent gets bailed out, but playing on conservative aggression should negate this somewhat. Never…ever try to block perimeter shots.

Close out with RS ALWAYS, regardless if you were playing off ball. Users get a slight bonus when they manually contest.

Playing ICE on pick and rolls:

This will force ball handlers to go baseline and your on ball defender will take away the middle. When opponents try to screen towards the middle your on ball defender will

jump in front of the pick and take away any contact that the ball handler tries to initiate on the ball handler defender, therefore there is no separation or contact and no help defense will be required.

This negates any pick and roll opportunities offenses try to create. No hedge is required, since your screener defender is there just to contain the PG until the on ball defender can recover. Again, if your defensive settings and POE’s are correct then there will be no unnecessary help rotations that will leave shooters wide open. You should control the on ball defender mainly when your opponent is setting on ball screens towards the baseline. Play more off ball on screens towards the middle.

Mixing it up can also be effective, where you can bait the ball handler to throw skip passes so you know you will recover to close out. Most people are used to seeing the opposite corner/wing being wide open due to automatic defensive settings and over aggressive online users playing limit perimeter shots.

The counter to beat this is for your opponent to start setting screens towards the baseline, but that is okay since it cuts the floor in half and leaving them less room to operate. We can still also on ball defend this and take away the screen. If you have the proper settings with good off ball help defense then this should be able to be contained.

The one downside to this scheme is the Pick and Pop, but not many online users utilize this at all. This is where you will need to start manually controlling your screener defender off ball and anticipate the pass to the screener on the fade for good close outs. Most stretch 4’s do not shoot well off the dribble, so if you can get a hard close out and force them to put the ball on the floor to drive then that is acceptable too. If they want to take semi-contested 3’s and mid range shots then that is what you want!

I hope you guys learned a thing or two from this defensive introduction. Remember this is just the beginning as we will continue to progress even further for this scheme.

  1. Nikola Vucevic, OVR 86 (+3) – Vooch has been on fire lately. He’s had 7 double-doubles in the past 8 games.

  2. LaMarcus Aldridge, OVR 86 (+2) – Aldridge has bounced back from an early slump and is producing for the Spurs.

  3. Carmelo Anthony, OVR 89 (+2) – When he’s healthy, he’s the best player on the Knicks. Kristaps Porzingis has been complimenting him nicely.

  5. Dwyane Wade, OVR 85 (+2) – Wade is still one of the top scorers in the league. He’s almost playing like his vintage self.

On the way down:

  1. Matthew Dellavedova, OVR 79 (-3) – He’s not playing as many minutes as before, so his numbers have dipped.

  2. Derrick Rose, OVR 80 (-2) – Rose is in a slump. He’s also a little banged up.

Madden 16 to Join EA Access Lineup in February

EA really wants you to try EA Access, their digital gaming service which offers a plethora of games on demand for one low monthly fee, as well as allowing you to play EA games ahead of their release. It’s pretty cool when you take into consideration the low price of $4.99/mo.

Quite a few of EA’s sports games are already part of the vault and included as part of the subscription, including Madden 15, FIFA 15, NHL 15, NBA LIVE 15, UFC, Madden 25, and FIFA 14. Today, however, EA announced that they’d be adding Madden 16 to the vault on February 2nd ahead of the 50th Super Bowl. Not bad!

If you’ve been wanting to check out Madden 16 and other EA Sports titles as well as Battlefield, Titanfall, and — perhaps the most important — Peggle, it might be worth dropping $4.99 to check it out. Unfortunately, it’s still not available for the PS4, making this an Xbox only deal. Bummer!

EA Play is Replacing EA"s Major Presence at E3

For a while now, it’s been a trend for publishers to pull out of E3 in favor of their own shows. Now, EA is following suit. Rather than have their press conference at E3 this year, EA are planning their own event from June 12 to June 14. The event will take place in Los Angeles at Club Nokia and The Mermaid in London, but the best part? It won’t be closed off to media and industry like E3, it’ll be open to everyone. That’s nice of them!

The event is called EA Play, and if you want to attend, you can sign up for a mailing list on the website. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean that EA isn’t having a press conference. They’re still going to hold one, it just won’t be at E3. They’re not bowing out of E3 entirely, as they will be taking private meetings, but they’ve given up their booth. Too bad! Hopefully they’ll return to E3 in a greater capacity at some point, EA are one of the biggest publishers out there, after all.

What Madden 17 Ultimate Team Needs: Tournaments And Wager Matches

As a die hard Madden Ultimate Team fan, I like so many others are sucked into the vortex that is this game mode. Every time I log on I get on what we call the MUT grind and start buying, selling, and doing whatever I can to make sure I have the best team possible. After I get this team however, the options in the mode are somewhat limited.

You have the solo challenges, which get a tad old and repetitive that are used more just to gain coins than for the fun of them. We also have online seasons which are good because of the online component, but get you very little coins and oftentimes your opponent will quit before the game is over. This is why we need to be offered more, and I believe two new modes would completely put this game mode over the edge and make it the greatest sports game mode ever made.

  1. Tournaments

Does the team behind Madden simply not see the success that FIFA has had with their tournament modes? The idea of being able to put five thousand coins into a 10 person tournament and play your way to the finals just seems so incredibly fun to me. I would be willing to spare a few thousand coins for the challenge, and I feel it would make gameplay a more important factor in the race to get the best team! It could have buy ins that range from one thousand to one million so everyone is able to join no matter their team overall or coins.

2. Wager Matches

They say you gotta “risk it for the biscuit,” and like many other madden players, I play ultimate team just for the wager matches. In order to do this, the two opponents have to put trust in each other and pay each other after the game using methods like selling a bad player for the amount of the wager. This has led to the “welcher,” the guy who simply blocks his opponent after he loses, meaning the winner never gets the coins he agreed to play for. We need the Ultimate Team developers to integrate this to finally give us a fair way to wager on their mode.

In my opinion, these two things are what this mode is missing. It is already the most popular mode, but it would skyrocket if these two things were integrated. So if you agree, please share this article and hopefully we can see this in Madden 17.

EA Sports Details UFC 2 Ultimate Team Mode

EA Sports has released a new trailer and blog post for UFC 2‘s ultimate team mode, detailing some of the features from this year’s edition of the fighting game. Essentially, it’s everything you know and love about ultimate team tailored specifically for UFC.

For UFC 2 ultimate team, you’ll be able to pick and choose a team of five fighters across four different weight classes. Each of these fighters can also be customized to your liking, from their gear to their appearance. Using coins, you can use coins to open fight packs and collect four different types of items to beef up your team; moves, attributes, perks, and consumables. You can also collect premium items, which are inspired by real UFC fighters.

Once you’ve got your team set up, you’ll be able to do single player or online championships and work your way up from prospect to champion. The longer you can defend your title, the further up the leaderboards you’ll find yourself. Seems like a great addition to the game!

EA Sports UFC 2 will be available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starting on March 15, 2016. Are you excited to play ultimate team? Let us know in the comments.

Madden 16 Top 10 Sleeper Pass Rushers

Here are some of the most underrated players in the game based on the ratings that actually matter. With that said here are our Top 10 Sleeper Pass Rushers Sleepers in Madden 16:

  1. DEIONTREZ MOUNT (TITANS/LOLB): 63 OVR/84 SPEED/81 AGILITY/89 ACCEL/78 PWR MOVE/68 FIN MOVE/64 BLOCK SHED/82 STAMINA

Mount is one of the easiest on the list to acquire because of the team he’s on. With Morgan, Woodyard, Zach Brown and Orakpo as more established played he shouldn’t be that hard to acquire The 22 year old rookie starts off with 84 speed, 89 accel and 78 power move so he could become a solid starter by the end of his rookie year.

  1. DAVID KING (CHIEFS/DT): 70 OVR/81 SPEED/73 AGILITY/86 ACCEL/77 PWR MOVE/49 FIN MOVE/80 BLOCK SHED/82 STAMINA

King is the 2nd fastest defensive tackle in the game and is especially valuable for leagues that have weight requirements on who can play the position. He has the makings of an impact d tackle with his 81 speed to go along with 77 power move and 80 block shed.

  1. SHAQ RIDDICK (CARDINALS/LOLB): 61 OVR/84 SPEED/83 AGILITY/90 ACCEL/65 PWR MOVE/85 FIN MOVE/63 BLOCK SHED/77 STAMINA

The 22 year old Riddick has the highest finesse move rating on the list at 85 and might be harder to pry from Cardinals owner due to the team’s lack of alternative options at his position.

  1. BRANDON COPELAND (LIONS/LOLB): 64 OVR/87 SPEED/83 AGILITY/88 ACCEL/78 PWR MOVE/58 FIN MOVE/69 BLOCK SHED/86 STAMINA

At 87 Speed, Copeland Is one of the fastest linebackers in the game and has similar pass rush ratings to one of the more popular rookies Bud Dupree.

  1. RONALD POWELL (BUCCANEERS /LOLB): 64 OVR/83 SPEED/85 AGILITY/90 ACCEL/84 PWR MOVE/65 FIN MOVE/67 BLOCK SHED/84 STAMINA

Powell has the highest power move rating on the list at 84 . and Considering Tampa runs a 4-3 and his ratings read like he’s a defensive end I’m not sure why he’s listed at linebacker so he’s good candidate for a position change and a overall rating boost if you get him.

  1. DAVIS TULL (SAINTS/LE): 66 OVR/87 SPEED/82 AGILITY/93 ACCEL/60 PWR MOVE/77 FIN MOVE/61 BLOCK SHED/80 STAMINA

You all know Donte Fowler, Dion Jordan and Randall Gregory? Well, Tull is faster than all of them and has the 2nd fastest acceleration in the game only to be beaten by another guy  yet to be named

  1. JOSH SHIRLEY (RAIDERS/RE): 60 OVR/86 SPEED/82 AGILITY/90 ACCEL/42 PWR MOVE/76 FIN MOVE/70 BLOCK SHED/86 STAMINA

Dude has  86 Speed and 90 Acceleration so we know he  can fly. To go along with 76 Finesse 70 Block Shed and more importantly 86 Stamina Shirley really has no weaknesses in his game to start with considering he’s a rookie.

  1. HOWARD JONES (BUCCANEERS/LE): 75 OVR/85 SPEED/79 AGILITY/89 ACCEL/57 PWR MOVE/77 FIN MOVE/78BLOCK SHED/92 STAMINA

The 25 year old Jones has 85 Speed, 89 Acceleration and one of the highest stamina ratings at his position in the league at 92, to go along with decent finesse and block shed ratings making him a starter Day 1 with room to turn into a dominant pass rusher in a year or 2.

  1. LARRY WEBSTER III (LIONS/LE): 69 OVR/86 SPEED/84 AGILITY/90 ACCEL/65 PWR MOVE/83 FIN MOVE/67 BLOCK SHED/78 STAMINA

He’s my personal favorite, as I always try and get him in every league I’m in. He’s 6-7 with 86 Speed so in my opinion he’s a baby Julius Peppers

  1. JULIAN STANFORD (JETS/ROLB): 72 OVR/87 SPEED/88 AGILITY/95 ACCEL/56 PWR MOVE/77 FIN MOVE/69 BLOCK SHED/78 STAMINA

Stanford has 87 Speed and the highest Acceleration for a linebacker in the game at 95, paired with 77 finesse and 69 block shed  and at 24 he’s a must get in you have the opportunity too.

MLB The Show 16 Vlog Details Road to the Show and ShowTime

Leading up to release, MLB The Show 16 developers San Diego Studio are providing a series of vlogs to talk about some of the features in the upcoming version of the game. Today they’ve released the first vlog, which details Road to the Show and ShowTime.

In this week’s video, Matt Schaeffer goes over some of the new features being added to Road to the Show. There’s the Bowman Scout Day, which he describes as an opportunity to display your individual skills for the scouts. Your performance on scout day and the showcase games afterwards will generate an MLB scouting report. These reports are now based on the 20-80 scouting scale, which is used by real MLB teams during the draft.

Road to the Show has also been streamlined, making it possible to play a full series of games without ever having to go back to the main menu, with access to the training screens in between. New to training is the addition of unlockable perks, which are acquired by training player attributes.

There are two types of perks, consumable and passive. Consumable perks can be used once per game, but you have control over when they’re used. Passive perks do not have to be activated. Your choice of perks will also affect the amount of showtime added to your meter at the beginning of each game. The more powerful your perks, the less showtime you’ll regenerate.

We’ve already seen showtime, but the video also offers a bit more detail on the feature. There isn’t much new there, although some new footage is always great. As part of the promotion for MLB The Show 16, San Diego Studio will be streaming the game on twitch as well as releasing additional videos every week. Based on the tentative schedule shown in the video, we’ll be learning a lot more about MLB The Show 16 up until March 15.

Psyonix Details Upcoming Rocket League Patch, Season 2 Changes

With such a high skill ceiling, Rocket League has become quite a hit with the eSports community. With such a competitive following, it’s no surprise that another ranked season is on the way.

Of course, like any competitive game worth its salt, Rocket League will see some changes moving into season 2. In anticipation of the new season and an upcoming patch that will be on the way next month, Psyonix took to their forums to talk about what’s in store.

According to the post, the focus of season 2 will be improving the matchmaking system to ultimately ensure that ranks are distributed the way that they should be, with less importance given to individual losses and wins.

Primary changes include renaming ranked play to “competitive matchmaking,” removing rank points, and replacing the season 1 divisions with 12 new ones, starting from Prospect I and going all the way to Champion. In the update on their forums, Pysonix have included an image detailing the new ranks.

Season-2-Division-Titles

Unfortunately, with the changes to ranks, that means you’ll have to do some placement matches going into season 2. Don’t fret, though. Your rank in season 2 will be “heavily influenced” by your rank in season 1. Promotion and demotion will also work differently in season 2. Now your rank will rise along with your skill consistent, which presumably works

scoreboard

Finally, the number of players in the top division will no longer be hard capped. As long as you meet the skill requirement, you will be placed there. Season 2 will also retain the top 100 with leaderboards based on skill rating.

In case you missed it, Psyonix have also detailed the rewards for season 1 of ranked play. The rewards are crowns based on your ranking, so if you got a silver rank, you’ll be receiving a silver crown.

Sounds like Rocket League is just going to get better moving into season 2. Will you be testing your skill this time around? Let us know in the comments.

NBA 2K16 Tutorials: Warriors Freelance Offense

Welcome to another edition of breaking down an NBA 2K freelance offense.  Today we are going to be talking about how to run the Warriors Freelance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDWlTqSWlwk

To begin, choose the Warriors Freelance and make sure you have 4 perimeter players with a stretch PF or a SF playing the PF position.

Initiation Spots

Now we are going to talk about the initiation locations.  View the image below to get a look at all of the spots on the court.  You can also get “split” actions out of the post from your 4 or 5.  These are initiated by passing to your low post.

nba2k16_warriors_freelance

Top of the Key with a PG, SG, SF: If you go to the top of the key with a PG, SG, or a SF you will get a wing player (the 4 or 5) to set an on ball screen for you and to begin a Pick and Roll action.  This is very basic albeit very useful.

Top of the Key with a PF/C:  The side away from the low post will do a pindown to the corner wing.  Now a dynamic read will occur:

1) A backdoor action from the opposite will occur then you swing the ball to the top and that same wing will pop up after the backdoor.

2) Or a quickscreen could occur to the opposite side for a wing to pop up to the top.  Then either a PnR action will occur or a pinch post action will occur.  A pinch post means one of your bigs will get the ball at the high post and your guard will cut through or come to your big for a handoff.  If you hold the ball you will get more off ball screen actions.

Wing: You will pass the ball to a big and it then you will get a branching option:

1) You can pass right back to the wing who initiated the offense and the opposite wing will get a quick screen then followed by a PnR or a pinch post action.

2) This is a dynamic read.

I) One option will be for another quick screen set for the opposite wing (similar to branch 1) and then will do either a pinch post action, flex action or PnR action.  So this is a dynamic read w/in a dynamic read w/in a branching option.

II) However, the other option will be when you swing the ball to the opposite wing, the wing who started the offense will cut through and go to the strongside baseline and then your high post player will screen for the opposite corner.  Now there are two more branches within this branch:

  1. A) If you pass to the guard coming to the top of they off a screen you will go into either a pinch post action or the guard will cut through and then your weakside wing in the corner will get a double pindown to come up to the top.

  2. B) If you pass to the corner then you will get a PnR action in the corner with your teammates on the other side of the floor.

Corner with PG, SG, or SF: Your wing will dribble out and pass to the top of the key.  Then you get two branches.  The guy who dribbled out of the corner will screen the guy in the corner to come up for a shot or you can pass to the other side, which will initiate a quick screen to the opposite wing followed by an entry pass to the high post.  This is my least favorite indication spot as there are limited actions, but it still is a nice way to mix things up.

Low Post with the PF/C: This is where the split action can occur.  Your big at the top will screen to the strong side wing.  He can either flash to the top off a flare screen or go backdoor.  The screener will then move to whatever space is available, either a flash to the basket or he will fade out for a kick out three.

Dynamic Reads

There are several dynamic reads that the AI will make for you.  You will see pinch post action, PnR’s, backdoors, and flex actions.  It is all based off personnel, spacing, and how the defense is playing you.

Good luck and remember to take your fastbreak points, use manual PnRs, and I’d suggest running some of the plays I posted in my youtube description from the Magic PB!!

R.B.I. Baseball 16 Features Mookie Betts as Cover Athlete, Coming Spring

R.B.I. Baseball 16 has its cover athlete, and it’s Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts. This makes Betts, who is 23 years old, the second youngest player to be featured on the cover of an MLB video game.

Below is some trivia about Mookie Betts, via the announcement from the R.B.I. website.

  • Mookie’s initials spell MLB (Markus Lynn Betts)

  • Betts is ranked among the AL’s top 20 hitters in many offensive categories, including batting average, stolen bases, OPS, slugging percentage, runs scored and hits in 2015.

  •  He is also one heck of a bowler

R.B.I. Baseball 16 will be available this Spring for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, iOS and Android. You can take a look at some screenshots from the game in the gallery below.

Sony Reveals Most Downloaded PlayStation Games of 2015

Sony has revealed a list of the most downloaded games from the PlayStation Store for Europe and North America. The lists include PS3, PS4, Vita and PS1 games as well as add-ons for the PS3 and PS4. Most of the titles are probably what you’d expect, but most notably, FIFA 16, Madden 16 and Rocket League managed to crack the top 15.

As for the top? Call of Duty: Black Ops III dominated the charts for both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4, though while it managed to achieve the number one spot for the PS4, it came in second after Minecraft on the PS3.

Minecraft is still doing well on every single console it sees release on, even years later. Interestingly though. the PlayStation 3 edition of Minecraft has been out since 2013, with a physical edition released in 2014. That’s staying power! The PlayStation 4 version of the game did well too, nabbing a spot at number 3 on the PS4 list. That version is a bit more recent, but still released in 2014. Wow.

The rest of the results probably won’t come as much of a surprise. Your favorite AAA games are on the board, from Grand Theft Auto V to Bloodborne, which only surprisingly sits at number 10.

Pretty interesting when you consider just how much hype there was around the game’s release and the DLC released in November. Maybe people just prefer the physical edition of that one! Although, tellingly, the game’s first, last, and only DLC The Old Hunters didn’t even crack the top 10 for DLC in 2015. Ouch! Maybe that has something to do with the fact that it was only released in late November.

The top DLC was Destiny with The Taken King, pulling in at number one. Sword Art Online -Hollow Fragment-, meanwhile, was able to take the number one slot for the Vita. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas proved its staying power by earning number one in the PS Classics category. That’s the rundown. You can check out the full PlayStation 4 list below, and if you’re curious about the other platforms, click over to the PlayStation blog.

NBA LIVE 16 Roster Update (1/21/16)

This week’s NBA LIVE 16 roster update is here, and that means changes are inbound. You can find the rundown from EA Sports below. For a more complete look at this roster update, check out the website.

Going up:

  1. LeBron James, OVR 93 (+2) – After a very brief slump, LeBron has returned to form. LeBron is the 2nd-highest rated player in NBA Live 16 (behind Stephen Curry, tied with Russell Westbrook).

  2. Chris Bosh, OVR 82 (+2) – Bosh is playing brilliantly alongside Hassan Whiteside in Miami’s frontcourt.

  3. Evan Fournier, OVR 78 (+2) – Fournier has proven to be a very valuable scoring threat for the Magic this year.

  4. Jimmy Butler, OVR 92 (+1) – Butler is arguably the best shooting guard in the NBA. He’s the highest-rated SG in NBA Live 16.

  5. Giannis Antetokounmpo, OVR 79 (+1) – The Greek Freak has been on fire lately, compiling 5 double-doubles in the last 6 games.

On the way down:

  1. Wesley Johnson, OVR 77 (-3) – Johnson has been playing more, but his stat sheet doesn’t necessarily reflect it.

  2. Andrew Bogut, OVR 85 (-2) – Bogut has not been as effective this year for the Warriors.

  3. Kyrie Irving, OVR 86 (-2) – Irving’s play, along with the Cavs, has been a little streaky lately.

  4. Nikola Pekovic, OVR 74 (-2) – Timberwolves head coach Sam Mitchell said that Pekovic has been rusty this year.

  5. Kyle Korver, OVR 76 (-2) – Korver is known for his amazing ability to hit 3s, but he’s only connected on 36% of his attempts this year.

What do you think of this week’s update? Let us know in the comments below.

NBA 2K Community Upset With Unresolved Issues in NBA 2K16

NBA 2K16 might be our game of the year for 2015, but no game is perfect, and that goes for NBA 2K16 as well. Now, the community at Reddit has banded together to inform the developers that yes, the game does have problems. Some are pretty bad. The post is effectively an open letter to 2K to address the community’s frustration with some aspects of the game.

Redditor yyy2K has put together a list of the things that they think need improvement, and asks that the community iterate on it. Here are the bullet points listed:

  • MyTeam Content: Dynamic+Moments+Diamond cards+New Gauntlet Boards

  • MyTeam Play to Win not Pay to Win

  • 2K MyTeam falling behind NBA Live UT

  • MyTeam 0-0

  • Pro-Am instability

  • In game advertising

  • VC purchase scamming

  • 2K Support

  • PC Cheaters

  • Users being banned for uploading pictures

As you’d expect of such a passionate fanbase, the community followed through, and yyy2k was able to put together a final draft of the letter.

Here is the final draft of the community’s letter to 2K in full, urging them to fix these issues:

NBA2K Staff and Devs,

Happy New Year! We hope that all of you can read this but ask that at least lead developer Mike Wang, developer Da_Czar, developer Erick Boenisch, the MyTEAM development team, roster manager Mike Stauffer, and community managers LD2K and Ronnie2K read this as they have communicated with us in the past.

This is a letter from /r/NBA2k, a subreddit dedicated to the NBA2K game series. It’s safe to say that our community loves NBA2K and plays it almost religiously every year, awaiting the new release. As a company, you have always encouraged us to speak up and give feedback. Given the current state of the game, we feel the need to bring up the following issues:

MyTEAM

Our community loves MyTeam. It’s possibly the most engaging mode in NBA 2K. However, the entire mode has stagnated and it seems content has been stalled. The general consensus in our sub is that NBA 2K16 is, as a whole, a much better game than NBA Live 16 gameplay wise. However, while 2K16’s MyTEAM has limped around this year, Live 16’s UltimateTeam consistently receives updates and new content almost everyday to keep their game mode fresh. The problem has become apparent enough that some members of our community are considering settling for the lower gameplay quality in Live 16 just because their content is so much more fleshed out. We hope you will return to releasing timely content and re-prove not only why players love your game but also why NBA 2K16 is considered the best basketball game. Below are a few aspects of MyTEAM that we have some concerns for:

UPDATE: It’s great to see that in the past two days (1/6 and 1/7) we’ve received massive roster updates. We hope this can be continued through the rest of the NBA season and we hope you can come up with a schedule so we know when to expect roster updates. Thank you LD2K for reaffirming that we will be seeing more moment cards as well as announcing a brand new D’angelo card. It’s a shame that huge moments like Draymond and Butler will be missed out but it’s good to see more cards being released.

Dynamic Cards: During this past summer and during the build-up to 2K16, we were overjoyed when we heard about the additions of ‘Dynamic Cards’, something that had been requested for a long time. We were promised constant roster updates which would be reflected in these cards. This was great at first and we had timely roster updates at least once a week but we haven’t seen a roster update in ages. The rosters aren’t current and Dynamic Cards are being rendered useless. We hope 2K can implement a weekly, or even daily if possible, roster update to reflect the current status of NBA players.

Moment Cards: Another card addition that was announced were the ‘Moment Cards’. This feature was up to par in the beginning and we got cards like Moment Hassan Whiteside and Moment Andre Drummond. However, in the past month or so, we have gotten 0 new Moments cards even though there are tons of huge games in the NBA (a list can be provided: Draymond Green’s triple doubles and Jimmy Butler breaking MJs record are just two examples). We hope 2K can keep up with the NBA and give us quick turnarounds for Moment Cards as promised. We believe Moment Cards have massive potential and it’s a shame to see them being ignored.

Fantasy Diamond Cards: We realize that the ‘fantasy’ Diamond cards might be something 2K thinks is cool but the community feels cheated. Having a Diamond Luis Scola or Jamal Crawford that is higher rated than some of the best players in the history of the NBA is outrageous. The damage has already been done but we suggest that the remaining unreleased cards in this category should either never be released or have their ratings edited to be more realistic.

Play to Win not Pay to Win: We understand that the pack odds must be low to keep the game mode competitive. However, they are seemingly too low. The pack odds are so bad that the thought of acquiring some of the best players in the game is impossible to most people. Most people will complete Domination and then give up on the idea of even attempting to improve their lineups for RTTP or Gauntlet because they can’t. Completing collections are also no help this year because many of them give you a game ball as a reward instead of a great card or MT. There aren’t enough ways to earn MT, and without another way to getting a high tier player, so many people have given up. Even dedicated players among our community have almost no chance of obtaining any of the new Diamond cards. So imagine the majority of players who can’t even obtain a single amethyst card outside of domination: How can we help those players begin to enjoy the game mode more? There should be more incentive to actually play the game to unlock good rewards. Instead of buying MT to get the best cards and win, they should be earned. The Road to The Finals weekly challenges were a great idea as players must complete all of them to get arguably the best center in the game. However, at the rate they’re being released, the series won’t be done until April. We hope 2K can add tons more content that rewards the players including continuing the RttF weekly challenges every week, releasing brand new challenges (a suggestions list can be provided) and new Gauntlet boards or even something brand new!

Game-Breaking 0-0 Bug: As 2K likely knows, the 0-0 bug has been a huge problem since release. This is the bug when the score is, due to various reasons such as server connection loss, reported as 0-0 and the player is given a Loss. Casual gamers and dedicated players among our community have both expressed disappointments in this bug because this means a 30-45-minute game is not only voided but also counts as an undeserved Loss. As players, we have no idea what exactly is the cause of this bug but we hope 2K can patch this up quickly as it is game-breaking to the MyTEAM mode.

Misleading Dynamic Packs: Finally, we wanted to include a quick tidbit on the Dynamic Packs at the release of the game. The description on the pack market for these packs said “you will be guaranteed a dynamic rating player”. However, that was not the case. We feel as many people were tricked and essentially scammed when they opened those packs. The description was then changed without 2K ever addressing the issue or giving refunds to anybody who bought it. We believe that was unacceptable and hope 2K can refund users and at least make sure problems like that will never happen again.

Pro-Am

Pro-Am was hyped as one of the best new modes in 2K and, without playing it, it seemed revolutionary. However, four months into the game the mode is still broken. The instability of Pro-Am games is a huge problem. 90% of the time, at least one of five players will be disconnected and kicked out and unable to play. Players are them forced to either quit the game or play without their friend(s). What makes it even more frustrating is “ghost” players will have occupied the court and that court becomes unusable. We hope Pro-Am can be fixed and the vision that 2K had can be realized because the game mode really has lots of potential. The few times we have been able to start and play games, it has been wonderful.

Game Advertising and Faulty Promotions

We feel that it is very annoying for 2K to add in-game advertisements to the bottom left corner of the HUD. This is extremely distracting for some users and also detracts from the basketball simulation experience. As customers, we have already paid for the game and we shouldn’t be subject to other obstructive advertisements for companies such as Nike or even an advertisement for another game mode. For example, the MyPARK Nike billboard for Kyrie was neat but putting a permanent watermark everywhere in the corner of the screen is obtrusive to the game. We hope 2K will not add these types of distracting in-game advertisements again.

Another major issue is the false advertising in the game. When users get to the menu, they are sometimes greeted with a VC discount. Sometimes it’s discount of X% off. When users go to buy VC, the discount isn’t there. Sometimes it’s ‘buy 35,000 VC and get an extra X amount of VC’. The extra VC never comes. This is essentially a scam. 2K is promising users a certain amount of VC with their purchase but the extra VC never shows up. 2K needs to either give the users the VC they paid for or refund them. This leads to the next point…

2K Support

Not only are users being scammed but there is no support system in place to help them get the VC that they bought back or get a refund. It’s hard to describe how bad 2K Support is. We aren’t blaming the support team itself because they are just doing their jobs but the support system is horrendous. It is absolutely unacceptable that it takes an extremely long time to get a response (as long as one month!). When the support team DOES respond, 90% of the time, it’s a seemingly automated response that has no help for the player. Even when someone is asking to get VC that they paid for, they still get a response like “Restart the game”. On the little chance that they understand what you’re talking about, they ask for proof that you got the promotion. How is a user supposed to know to screenshot the promotion ahead of time? Users are completely being scammed out of their hard-earned money. 2K Support is one of the worst customer service systems in the gaming industry. It is frustrating and infuriating to deal with them and most of the time, there is no result. We hope that users can be refunded for their VC or actually given the VC and also that 2K Support is revamped/improved in a reasonable amount of time (hopefully before the release of 2K17).

Communication

It is disappointing to the players that the developers of one of the biggest games on the market (one of the statistically best-selling games every year) has almost no communication with the community. From the developers, to the community managers, all the way down to the support team, the communication between them and us is unacceptably bad and frankly, almost non-existent. If 2K could look at rival companies such as EA and what they do with Madden or FIFA it can immediately be seen the difference in communication with the users.

We hope 2K can improve their communication with us. This process starts with the developers. Anytime community managers LD2K or Ronnie2K are asked questions on the weekly broadcasts, they have to say “I don’t know” or “We’ll ask the dev team and get back to you”; we never get a reply. We believe them, they truly don’t know. We aren’t blaming them. 2K must understand that the community managers are the only line of communication we have with the developers. We hope the developers can establish a clearer line of communication to the community by providing the community managers information so that they can at least give us real weekly updates on all content/game news/roster updates. LD2K joining Reddit was a great first step that we applaud him for but it is not enough. Also, we hope there can be another form of communication other than the weekly Twitch broadcasts. Those are not accessible for all players and it would be much better if they could post content updates on Facebook or the official 2K website as well.

UPDATE: This lack of communication was given the spotlight today (1/8). The DPoY packs that were initially supposed to be released today were going to be delayed. If the community had not expressed their frustrations to LD2K and Ronnie2K, we would have been left clueless as to why we didn’t get the packs as promised. LD2K even admitted that he didn’t know why they weren’t released. It took over 3 hours for a response to be communicated from the developers to LD2K and then to the community. Luckily, the packs, albeit delayed, were still eventually released but the lack of communication is still an ongoing problem.

PC Cheaters

The problem of cheaters on PC must be addressed. It ruins all online modes for PC players who are playing by the rules. Players are using Cheat Engine to modify their stats in MyPARK and Pro-Am, give themselves all badges, or even be a 7’7 center with 99 speed and 99 3pt shooting, etc. Although there were bans in the past, they were easy to workaround. Nothing has changed. Those users are still ruining the game for everyone else. We hope 2K can address this problem and find away to not only patch the vulnerabilities that allow the game to be hacked but also permanently ban the cheaters and hackers.

User Bans for Photo Uploads

We have noticed that there are users in our community that are being banned for seemingly no reason. For example, we have had users banned for uploading pictures of NBA players or logos. The craziest scenario is a user who was banned because he reported a game breaking bug to 2K Support. The user was not given a thank you or a fix but instead a ban. These users are banned from every online aspect of the game (which is most of the game) and are now unable to play the game they love. We hope 2K can address this as it is completely unfair to the players. Users should be given a clear reason as to why they are banned. In the case of uploading pictures, users should be given clear guidelines as to what images are considered ban-worthy. Images of NBA logos should not lead to a ban. As for the user who reported a bug, there is no fathomable reason as to why he was banned.

We sincerely want to thank you for reading this! NBA 2K has been a staple in many of our game collections every year but we have just been somewhat disappointed with NBA 2K16. This should be viewed as a list of suggestions as well as an expression of our desire for 2K to improve as a company and uphold the high standards the community has. We hope these problems can be addressed in a timely manner and that NBA 2K16 can be improved.

Mike Tyson Makes UFC Debut in EA Sports UFC 2!

One of the most iconic athletes of all time is coming to EA SPORTS UFC 2. Electronic Arts Inc. announced today that Mike Tyson will make his mixed martial arts debut as an unlockable fighter when the game comes out starting March 15, 2016. Fans who pre-order EA SPORTS UFC 2 will get instant day-one access to Tyson, and all players can unlock him by progressing in the game and making it to the Hall of Fame in Career Mode. The former undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world packs the strongest punching power of any fighter in the game and will fight across two different weight classes: light heavyweight and heavyweight. For a first look at the former champ in EA SPORTS UFC 2, watch the Mike Tyson reveal video.

“When you think about the most devastating fighters of all time, Mike Tyson is either around, or at the top of everyone’s list. It’s fun to think that if MMA was as popular back when he was competing as it is today, you might have seen Tyson put on four ounce gloves and step into the Octagon,” said Creative Director Brian Hayes. “This is one of those great ‘what ifs’ that we get to create when making a game like EA SPORTS UFC 2.”

Two versions of Tyson are coming to the game: “Iron” Mike Tyson based on his climb to stardom and string of invincible fights in the eighties; and “Legacy” Mike Tyson, developed with the end of his illustrious career in mind. Fans who pre-order the standard edition of EA SPORTS UFC 2 will get day-one access to “Iron” Mike Tyson. Those who opt for the Deluxe Edition will receive both “Iron” Mike as well as “Legacy” Mike Tyson. Both versions are available to unlock by progressing in the game.

“As a huge fan, I’m honored to be part of EA SPORTS and explore the world of mixed martial arts,” said Mike Tyson. “I follow UFC very closely and it’s going to be very cool to see how I would stack up against these amazing MMA athletes.”

EA SPORTS UFC 2 takes the franchise’s stunning character likeness and animation to another level, adds an all-new Knockout Physics System and authentic gameplay features, and introduces the biggest ever roster of real-world fighters in a MMA game who will step back into the Octagon on Xbox One and PlayStation®4. NBA 2K16 Money Plays: Motion Cross Offensive Scheme

Welcome to another edition of NBA 2K16 offensive tutorials! Today I will be talking about the Orlando Magic playbook and how to implement NBA 2K16 Money Plays into your scheme!

These are the money plays out of this playbook!

To set them up, simply go to gameplan – assign plays and make sure you have PnR Ball Handler, PnR Point, and 3 PT set as your priorities with your respective players. For example, you can use all three of these on Curry but you may want to just have 3 PT set for Klay Thompson.

Main Plays:

FIST 41 CROSS – A PnR/PnF on the wing with your 2 or 3. This is great for a 5 out offensive and having guys like Draymond Green at the 5. The 2 and 3 will exchange places before the PnR and the 5 will be on the weakside corner.

FIST 15 CROSS – Your ball handler will be the one coming off a screen for a either a shot or another PnR. There are 4 different ways to initiate this offense with 3 resulting in the same result. First, your guards will exchange spots at the corner and weakside wing. You can then pass directly to your center to swing the ball. You can wait for for the guard to cut through and pop out to the corner. You can hand off or pass directly to him.

If you choose to keep the hand off, you will go into a PnR immediately. If you choose any of the other 3 options, your ball handler will cut through and come off a down screen at the opposite wing for a shot or a PNR. Your center can either hand it off or pass directly to the ball handler coming off the double screen. This involves a lot of options and movement, but it is fairly easy to memorize.

FLOPPY 74 QUICK – This play will get you wide open for a mid-range or 3 point shot. It is a simple off ball curl screen with 3 screeners for one of your shooters.

FLOPPY 3 RIP – The ball handler will be coming off a triple screen, similar to FLOPPY 74 QUICK. However, the ball handler dekes like he will be setting the screen for one of the wings and then he goes off a triple screen. If nothing is there then there will be a PnR opportunity and your opposite wing will pop out for a skip pass.

FIST 19 – This is a Horns base with your 2 bigs setting double on ball screens. This is just a money PnR play where you have tons of options.

FIST 53 QUICK – This a PNR action that will have 2 passes or 1 pass/handoff before a PnR initiates with a shooter. This can be also utilized with a 5 out offense.

Lastly, make sure you run manual pick and rolls, flushes/backdoors, isolations, and take your points in the fastbreak. This scheme works best with 4 out offenses like Pace, Warriors, Hawks, 4-1 out, etc. This will conclude our Magic PB scheme tutorial. Be sure to try out these NBA 2K16 Money Plays and let us know how they worked for you in the comments below or on social media!

NHL 16 EASHL Tips: Film Session 1 - Studying Like the Pros

Welcome to the first EASHL Film Session! The purpose of this series is to watch some gameplay that was either sent to me or recorded myself. I’m going to break it down, go over what you do well, what can be worked on, and I’ll offer my advice on what can be done to help take you to the next level. I hope you guys enjoy and I’d appreciate any feedback in the comments section to help me make this series the best it can possibly be. This is open to both goalies and skaters, for today’s video we’re going to analyze the skaters of the LG Texas Stars.

Team Issue #1 – Corner Containment

This is one of the toughest defensive concepts to grasp, as it requires all 5 skaters to know their responsibilities. Whoever is defending him is usually chasing instead of containing and the puck carrier is able to get a clear path to the front of the net.

img1

Here in this play the puck carrier is in the right corner. Here are the team’s responsibilities to effectively contain the puck.

1. Yellow – Approaches the skater from the boards as to cut off a passing lane behind the net and prevent the puck carrier from attempting a wrap around. If yellow cannot win his 1 on 1 battle, his job is to ‘guide’ the puck carreir towards a teammate. If the pass does go behind the net, yellow can sprint towards the right post AND teal is ready to protect the net.

2. Red – Red approaches the edge of the cirle. First he must be in line with any passing lane towards the slot. Next he’s ready to make a play on the puck carrier should he try to cut towards the middle. If the puck does escape the corner he’s most likely going back towards the slot.

3. Blue – Notice where blue currently is. He’s left the entire half-boards open as an escape route for the puck carrier. If you position yourself by the half-boards you accomplish multiple goals. First of all blue is in the passing lane towards the defenseman. Next he’s given less space for the puck carrier to escape. And third he’s ready to make a play should the puck carrier get too close (most likely from yellow/red guiding him towrads you).

4. Teal – protect the net, make sure you have inside positioning on whoever you are covering. Make yourself ready to protect either post and look for anybody crashing the net.

5. Green – Starts off in the High slot. You are covering for ‘Red’. Be ready to move lower if anybody’s crashing that area. Be ready as you are most likely the first forward out of the zone on the breakout but remember protecting the slot comes first.

Team Issue #2 – Blue Line Defense

img2

Our Defenseman play too far off the blue line and the other team is able to walk into the zone. In 1 game, I saw 7 free entries in the zone. That’s 7 free possessions they have in our end, and any team is going to take advangtage. Stay a little bit closer to the blue line, you don’t have to go for the hit. Stay close, stay controlled, and if you can’t take the puck away, then slow him down and guide him towards the boards or to forward on the backcheck.

Team Issue #3 – Protect the Slot, ESPECIALLY SHORTHANDED

Last but not least, protect the slot. It’s nothing fancy but once in a while we’ll go after the puck or do something which leaves the front of the net exposed. Hockey has this statistic for goalies called HomePlate Save %. A shot from inside the HomePlate area has the highest chance of going in so that needs to be your priority when it comes to defense, even moreso on the penalty kill.

GOOD! 5 on 4, play a tight box and protect the slot!

When shorthanded, your focus should be on protecting the slot and not giving them a clear path to the net. Once your team is set up, then you can focus on containing the puck carrier like the first tip.

That wraps up the first EASHL Film Session. I want to say more nice things in future videos, but they asked me to ‘be mean’. I think we’ll do much better if we lock down the blue line and work together more as a team in the defensive end in time for the playoffs. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

If you want your gameplay broken down, both goalies and skaters, team and individual, let me know. I prefer to focus more on the individual but if teams are interested I’ll help. I hope you guys enjoyed, and hopefully I’ll see you in the next film session. 😀

NBA LIVE 16 Roster Update (1/14/16)

This week’s NBA LIVE 16 roster update is here, and that means changes are inbound. You can find the rundown from EA Sports below. For a more complete look at this roster update, check out the website.

Going up:

  1. Kyle Lowry: OVR 89 (+3) – Lowry is playing like one of the best players in the league right now.

  2. Patrick Beverley: OVR 81 (+2) – Beverley’s shooting has been one of the few bright spots for the Rockets this season.

  3. Kawhi Leonard: OVR 92 (+2) – It’s time to recognize Leonard as a legit MVP candidate and superstar.

  4. Jimmy Butler: OVR 91 (+2) – Butler’s dominance in Chicago continues. He’s having a great month, averaging more than 27 points per game.

  5. Draymond Green: OVR 90 (+2) – He’s averaging nearly a double-double per game and leads the league in triple-doubles.

On the way down:

  1. Tim Duncan: OVR 84 (-2) – Duncan is still productive but his role has definitely scaled back this season.

  2. LeBron James: OVR 91 (-1) – James hasn’t been playing like the best player in the NBA.  .

  3. Marc Gasol: OVR 84 (-1) – It’s been an up and down year for Gasol. He’s been slumping again

  4. Kobe Bryant: OVR 80 (-1) – There have been random games where Kobe will show flashes, but it’s been a rough year overall.

  5. Zach Randolph: OVR 79 (-1) – Randolph is now a backup in Memphis, but he’s been putting up better numbers against other subs. We see his rating leveling off around here.

ESPN Launches ESPN eSports

Remember when everyone talked about how eSports and sports were different? I never thought so. ESPN’s president John Skipper did, however. For the past couple of years, they’ve been backpedaling on that, allowing more and more eSports content onto the network. Now they’re finally giving eSports their full endorsement by including a dedicated section for it on their website under the name of ESPN eSports.

It’s about time! The popularity of eSports has only been growing, and with that kind of growth, it’s unlikely that eSports will ever go away. Now that eSports has managed to work its way into the ESPN network, maybe the debate whether eSports are actually sports will cease. Considering that ESPN has been broadcasting eSports events for a while now, however, that seems unlikely.

While I thought that 2016 would be a big year for eSports thanks to big players like EA Sports and 2K getting involved, ESPN eSports should make it even bigger. When the biggest name in sports reporting finally opens their door for something, you know it’s an accomplishment. So thanks for finally recognizing the popularity of eSports, ESPN. It’s been a long climb, but 2016 is looking like the year that will prove the staying power and legitimacy of eSports. That’s cause for celebration!

Is ESPN eSports confirmation that eSports is no longer a niche? Let us know in the comments below.
